The wasteland pandemic. (1 Viewer)

Olly Buckle

I was listening to a programme on the radio yesterday about writing and pandemics and they suggested that T S Elliot's The Waste Land was not about the first world war, as most people thought, but about the 1919 flu epidemic. Apparently both Elliot and his wife caught the flu and were seriously ill, and there are are bits, 'Burning, burning', which are strongly reminiscent of flu symptoms. An interesting thought.
