I'm currently writing a horror young adult novel (I've actually been on it for 3 years now) and there's something in the plot I can't seem to get past. It's about these two young sisters visiting their aunt in Massachusetts for the summer and during a hike in the woods one day, the girls come across a very old cemetery where a malevolent spirit takes hold of the youngest. The spirit was murdered in the 1600s and wants to get her vengeance on those responsible for her death by possessing the little girl and killing the descendants. I guess what my problem is, is I don't know how to bring in the descendants into the story without them being unnecessary characters. In my book, the girls are in a summer program and I was thinking of including a few of the people from that event, but I don't know. Because otherwise, the sisters don't really know anybody in that small Massachusetts town except their aunt. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
