Stepped Outside my Comfort Zone by giving 3 speeches at a College Teacher Convention (1 Viewer)

Last weekend, I attended a large college teacher convention and gave 3 speeches based on my 2 nonfiction books. This was a huge step for me as I wasn't sure I'd have the guts to give presentations in front of my peers from all over the state (and possibly making a fool of myself!). Anyway, I'm happy to report that all 3 speeches went smoothly, and I had a good time giving them. I didn't want to mention my books too much during my presentations as these are my peers. I did give away some free books at each speech. Luckily, some folks in the audience of my 2nd and 3rd presentations asked about my books and I ended up selling almost 20 books. That was a nice surprise, and I'm very grateful to have sold this many. I'm undecided if I'll do this convention again next year or not... depends on whether they do it out of town or not (this 3-day trip cost me about $700 and my book sales were less than $200, so not sure it makes economic sense to continue doing this event). In any case, it looks good on my (author) resume, and I'm very grateful for the exposure that me and my books received from this event.

I'm curious to hear if other folks on this forum have had luck selling enuf books at out of town speeches to justify the cost?

Book fairs & public events are more about getting your name out there than making a profit. I sell a box of books at these events, but I doubt I break even.
I have a book fair Sunday, and the big focus there will be giving away free book marks. Seems counter intuitive, but the free book marks lead to my other stuff on Amazon, and will hopefully add a few sales after the show.

Right. I'm not saying that I shouldn't give free speeches related to my books. I have been doing that for almost a year now. But until this conference, I had only given local speeches (which cost next to nothing, so I'm pretty sure I at least broke even or better). I'm only debating whether I should continue to do these out of town speeches which are relatively pricey (hotel, travel, meals, conference registration, etc.).
