Henry II (1 Viewer)

Act One

Scene One

[On a beach in Dover]

[Enter Chorus]

For eight years have many battles been fought between two
cousins seeking the throne of England. These two kin were
that of Matilda and Stephen. This war split the nation into
two; those loyal to the anarchist Stephen and the
monarchial Matilda. During the war, a son of Matilda rose and
began showing qualities as a new leader. This was Henry son of
Geoffrey d'Anjou. And here we are left as Henry mounts a
military expedition to aid his mother in the civil war.

[Exit Chorus; Enter Henry, Geoffrey, Squires,

My mother's cousin Stephen has reigned in his anarchy for
much too long. And preceding his reign he betrayed his uncle
Henry king of England who swore his daughter Matilda the throne.
But with my small force of mercenaries, I hope to defeat Stephen
and put my mother in here proper seat as leader of England! Though I
inexperienced in my youth, I am confident that God has instilled
bravery and victory in my soul and with that, I shall take England
for my mother and grant her this land as she was properly entitled
by her mother Henry. Come my brother, I will lead the way toward

Why must you lead the way brother, hm? Do you not think me able?
I was bore by the same parents and but a year later than thee.
I do not even know why you chose to take me on this expedition.
It is useless to meddle in other's affairs when you have but a
minute host of men.

What is the meaning of this brother? Do you intend to revolt?
Have you not sworn loyalty to your family? Why should you manifest
such a rebelious behaviour when you, my sibling, have decided on
helping your mother?

I speak not of revolt brother. I would never betray my kin; unless,
of course, you were to betray me first. I have come thus far and I
will not turn back now.

[Enter Herald]

Sirs! My Lady Empress Matilda sends a message. She means to inform
you that Stephen's men are not a weak force. Take caution as you

Aye, thank you good Herald, send word to our mother of our coming;
though our strength weak, our will is strong and so we shall prevail.
If God be with us, then we ask him to guide us to victory and
reinstate peace in these lands. Let us all praise God for our present
deliverance across the channel and pray for our safe keeping. Come my
brothers let us pray together a prayer of yore.

O Saint Joseph whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt
before the Throne of God, I place in you all my interests and desires.
O Saint Joseph do assist me by powerful intercession and obtain for me
from your Divine Son all spiritual blessings through Jesus Christ, our
Lord; so that having engaged here below your Heavenly power I may
offer my Thanksgiving and Homage to our most Loving of Fathers. O
Saint Joseph, I never weary contemplating you and Jesus in your arms.
I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press him in my
name and kiss His fine Head for me, and ask Him to return the Kiss
when I draw my dying breath. Saint Joseph, patron of departing souls,
pray for us. Amen.

Go herald, give word of our coming to my mother Matilda. Move swiftly
as we will do the same, stay to your horse and never stop until you
reach the castle gate. May God bless you and grant you speed.

[Exit Herald]

Our time has come to ride into battle. May Christ be with us and guide
us to victory, so that we may bring back order to this anarchial
country under Stephen de Blois. Now, we will be off. To horse!

[Exit all but Geofferey]

My poor naive brother. Such a brave soul much like his mother's.
This petty cause will soon prove against him. And if Stephen gives up
the throne, and Henry is made king of England, I shall then make peace
with my brother so if by chance an arrow were to strike him down on
the field of battle, I would be made king in close succession. Yes, a
good plan is this, I hereby swear that my brother shall be closest to
me and that he shall be my master. No, no, begone thoughts; I cannot
make my way to the throne in such a way, nor can I be lower than my
brother; after all, his heritage is more cloudy than my own. No,
instead I shall resent my brother and prove to the world that I should
be king of England. If God be with me, then I shall become king, if He
is with Henry, then king he shall be!

[Exit Geofferey]
