I highly recommend everyone at least give this novel a try. I particularly recommend it to anyone who is a history buff and is especially interested in Victorian Era England. It gives some fascinating insights into Victorian culture, as well as society and human behaviour in general as it compares and contrasts our new age morality to that of a bygone era.
From a strictly literary standpoint, many consider this to be one of the landmark works of the 20th century. With multiple endings and a combination of Victorian and Modern writing styles, it is a truly unique and even daring novel. Pay special attention to Chapter 13 (I think it was 13; it's been a while since I've read it).
I haven't seen the movie yet, but I've heard good things about that as well.
