andhas a direct effect on the consumers as well as on the writers andpublishers.
Thereis a concept in the technology world- open source programs andcompanies. Open source is a social idea in the technology communitymeans that the technology should be developed by the community(programmers) and should not be proprietary of a certain company. Itenables the development of ideas and technologies, and encouragescompetition.
Inthe eBook industry- epub standard is an open source technologydeveloped developed by the IDPF. many companies are companies in thisorganization: Helicon Books, Kobo, Sony, Apple, and many others.Together they develop the future e-readers and technology foreBooks.
Themost advanced standard is EPUB3 enables Ebooks with special featuressuch as videos, multimedia, SVG, rotated images, MathML, otherlanguages support, etc.
HeliconBooks even developed a reader with a 3D option- which is beyondepub3.

Whatdoes it mean for writers?
Thereaders exist. and more and more companies will soon use this opensource technology and join the developments of more advancereaders.
Rightnow since it's new - the content is missing. We need more and morewriters to be familiar with this EPUB3 options and write or converttheir content to EPUB.

Amazonis against competition and in favor of high prices

Amazonis a giant company (not just for books). They developed the Kindle, which isn't an open source program. Actually the concept of opensource is a major threat for them since more and more companies willbe able to develop open source readers. writers who choose to publishtheir ebook with epub open source technology can be read on everyepub readers. However they can't be read on Kindle- and this is howAmazon acts to prevent competition, but it won't work.
thereare a lot of epub readers in the market, and even new readers ofEPUB3. There are a lot of eBook publishers and a lot of epube-books.
The Open source is going to win this battle.
itis well represented in this article as well: dailywireless.org » EPub3 Vs HTML: Fight!

Amazon is against competition and in favor of high prices.

This is the first sentence that popped out, and also was enough to get me to stop taking you seriously.

By the way, who says you have to choose one format alone? Good luck telling writers to not publish with the industry leader.
