Old springs, familiar voice, screen door slaps closed.
Redwing blackbirds call me home, grandfather’s cottage.
My life begins, his flashes past, stories passed, those who knew.

Monochromatic framed puzzles hang, walls of knotty pine,
Bits in time leave longing, pick this kindred spirit’s mind
Fishing closet, rods hang, tackle lay in trays, tucked away

His fascination, toothy fish, habits, predatory haunts.
No key for me, clues of chosen few, fuzzy, second hand,
watery terrain, glacially sculpted, depth surrounding, hills to flat.

fishermen floating from Eisenhower’s America, oils, wisdom play
Knowing points, motions, colored notions, sensing wild call.
spiritually their contemporary, his fishing boat, quietly floating solo.

Understanding gained vicariously, stumbling as young men do, serendipity.
yellow jig with creek cub’s bottom dance, pounced, three fathoms down,
Warm smile my chest, color photographic stills, new stories hang with his.
