    Books to have for Poets

    Ye all:

RH & I had a conversation where I recommended that he buy The Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics, and so should you. It runs to 992 pp. & everything is in it, except the question RH asked me. To answer his question, I consulted the Oxford English Dictionary, which you may be able to find in a used bookstore (multiple volumes) or a used copy of it on disk; it's a subscription service now for about $100/yr & probably not worth it on that basis. The only other books I'd recommend as must reading are Ezra Pound's ABC of Reading, a cheap paperback, and Karl Shapiro's A Primer for Poets, which is a pamphlet & rare.

The Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics goes for as little as $8 on Ebay:

ABC of Reading goes for as little as $4:

    or at thriftbooks:

A Primer for Poets, a thin pamphlet, is rare and will cost you $16.71 on Amazon, but worth it.

The 20-volume Oxford English Dictionary will set you back $1,180 new, but you'll have it for life, comes with supplements, and looks beautiful on a shelf.

Or you can get a used 1989 edition for $746, which has all but the most absurd modern stuff:

But you can get a recent compact edition for about $50, in very small type:

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/The-Oxford-...AAOSwzmZf1SO6n

Or you can get the one I have on disk for $7. I can't vouch for this one disk version; mine has two disks and worked only on DOS, it's that old. This one is a gamble, but it's cheap:

ALWAYS CHECK THE YEAR FOR THE MOST RECENT OED EDITION.

Everything else I've read about poetry & poetics is a line on the vita of the one who wrote it.
