I'll second what Olly said above. I believe discipline is important. I usually write every afternoon (noonish until 6pm), and even on days when I don't feel inspired, I've found that once I sit down and read a bit of what I'm working on, my enthusiasm grows.

I've always been an avid reader, and believe reading the works of others (in and out of my chosen genre) helps me get a feel for how a story should be constructed.

I've been on a few writing boards over the years, and you've just found what I consider to be the best one. We all hope you find help and inspiration here, and pass the same along when you can.

I OFTEN recommend a book to writers just starting to crank it up: It was the best of sentences, It was the worst of sentences by June Cassagrande. It's not just a grammar refresher, but an excellent guide to writing effective sentences, whether in fiction or non-fiction. As a bonus, June herself is an entertaining writer, and there are chuckles on most pages.
