This human animal

We walk upright
Our speech produces humor
We enroll in institutes of learning
Our clothes that our clever hands make
cover most of our weaknesses
Or strategically reveal
the deeper mask of human ego
sex being the one act when
it appeals to us to remember
We are animals

All our coolness
and rationalization
every second that we spend
pretending we have no fear
No fear like meer animals fear
Makes us also cruel
Cruel because
in the daily hustle
Of creating the delusion
That we won’t die
we forget our compassion
We try to elevate ourselves
above the preciousness of life!

Today I heard a scientist say
serial killers show no fear
they show no sadness
Yes, feelings we didn’t want
But now I know our fear
is what makes us human
our altruistic self is animal
the part that knows fear
knows death love and kindness
The animal is what connects us
the animal that suckled an infant
the animal that howls
for my love when you die

I think I’m moving this to Poet’s showcase where everyone seems to be reading tonight. A could keep chewing at it, but I’m pretty happy with it.

We are born, we will die
all our coolness
and rationalization

My Gosh you wrote our hearts. We deserve your writings dear. Humans as animals, we know fear, bind to know, love, care. Wolves howl for their dearones whom die, how are we better than them.... except our brain a bit superior.

Thank you, Ruth! I’m so glad it struck a chord with you! The idea do for me too... I hope I did justice to what I truely feel is the thing worth fighting for about us humans... which is everything that makes us belong to the class of mammals, actually and gives us our humanity. Ugh hopefully the poem spoke for it! /hugs and I so appreciate your poetry and just want to see more!
