    Proper MS format Headers

    I tend to use " | " symbol to separate my last name & the story title on my docx headers.

    I believe " / " is more popular, but I have never seen this rule explicitly stated.

    I also tend to choose headers that have a slight opacity.

    I'm not sure if either of these things are worth worrying about.

    Use whatever suits you taste, I use | when separating İMy Name | 2020 so I see no reason why it can't be used as you suggest, after all, it is the separator character...
