    Upcycling: creating a mosaic table

A couple of years ago I found this solid plastic table discarded at our local rubbish bins so being a bit of a Womble I brought it home and put in the garage. During this time I collected an assortment of swimming pool tiles, also dumped at the local bins, or scavenged samples from various tile shops.

I am now in the process of creating a curved design from square tiles. Hence the saying: trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.

That top picture, the table looks like a clock, because of the pair of tongs on top

Haha... they are 'nippers' to cut the tiles with.

I love the fluidity of the design. There's something really delightful about taking square tiles and making them flow like that. Not to mention giving some old things new life. Great job!

Pretty! Is that your work in the background, too? Looks like a butterfly?

Looks like you are a nutural at this! Was at a local Open Studios Day a few weeks back - the mosaic woman there cuts her own pieces - says she wears full protective clothing because of danger of dust inhalation. Seems a bit heavy to me. I used to do clay work - have asthma and gave it up. Rather enjoyed it!

Yes, the butterfly mosaic is the first one I created.

I don't make any dust ... the biggest danger is stabbing your finger with the glass pieces, which I did while making this. Or flying splinters of glass when cutting. Maybe she uses a different method to stick the pieces in place.
