    Love Katy (998 words)

It was early morning Manhattan in June; noisy and wet. The young woman wended her way toward the apartment building where she would be working that day. Pulling her gear behind her as she crossed the street, her foot landed in a puddle on the curb. She barely noticed.

Patty loved her job. It had taken her a long time to be able to work this strip, but she knew that once she had a gig at a famous person's dwelling, she would be okay. If she was good enough for them to pass the word, she would have more work than she could imagine and earning a pretty penny for it to boot. And who could complain about working in an place where wealthy, famous people had created their home?

As she walked she thought about what it might be like to be famous, well-known and loved by so many people. Such a life must be like a dream, Patty thought. Nothing to worry about, no cares about paying bills, only living a life of luxury. And happiness. She knew she would never be famous, but it was fun to think about.

She waved at the concierge behind the front desk with a happy smile and he returned her good morning. She liked being known. Not famous of course, but at least being acknowledged wherever she worked. Making her way to the service elevator, she passed some residents on their way out and beamed good morning at them too. Only a few responded.

Alone in the elevator, Patty pushed the fifteenth floor button, listening to the melodic sounds of Michael Buble and humming along as she rode up. Turning right, down the long hallway, she fished out her keys. Opening the door to darkness, she pulled her cart behind her and went directly to the kitchen.

Just like every day on this job, the drapes were drawn. Patty knew it would probably still be light out when the Spades came home, so before she cleaned each room, she would open the drapes and let the light in. In the evening, Patty knew the sun would be on the other side of the building, so the lighting would be perfect and welcoming.

Patty always saved the kitchen for last, but she looked around and saw half-empty coffee cups and part of a bagel with the container for cream cheese still out. She put that away in the refrigerator, looking around for any other perishables, and then went into the living room to assess what needed to be done.

It was then Patty heard a sound; a soft thud, like something falling. The large living room was in the center of the apartment. Not knowing where the noise had come from, she stood for a moment in confusion, turning her head one way and then another. Maybe someone was still here, she thought.

    "Miss Kate?" No answer. "Frances?"

The apartment had three bedrooms that were each like identical wings in a castle. The individual suites were large, with on-suite bathrooms that could hold three of Patty's own. One was the Spade's bedroom suite, one belonged to their daughter Frances, and the other was for guests. Thinking they may have had a guest overnight, Patty went in that direction to check out the noise.

She walked very slowly down the dark hallway. "Hello? Is anyone there?"

The door to the guestroom was closed; Patty opened it and went it. It felt cold in the room. It was the one room where she seldom opened the drapes, unless Katy told her they were expecting company and to get the room ready. There was no note left in the kitchen, and after looking everywhere, Patty could tell no one had been staying there since the last time she had cleaned the suite.

In confusion, she walked back towards the living room. The apartment was so far above the noise and chaos of downtown Manhattan, that she knew the sound didn't come from outside. Well, she had work to do, she thought, and no time to consider a noise that may have just been in her head.

Back to assessing the living room, Patty saw only a few things out of place. She needed to dust all the flat surfaces, clean the large mirror, vacuum and tidy up. She found the throw had spilled wine on it, so she waded it up and put it in the wash pile. She would do the laundry at noon.

Patty put in her earbuds to begin vacuuming, listening to Ed Sheeran telling her to Love Herself . She went all over the living room, humming, then into the dining area, down the hall toward the guest suite and back again to the Spade's bedroom. She stopped outside the door, which was closed.

They never close this door. For some reason, she felt hesitant to open it, but then thought she was being silly, turned the knob and went in. There was a short hallway that led to the actual bedroom and Patty vacuumed that, stopping as she came to the unmade bed. There was something wrong. Patty looked around and felt an odd sense of something; dread or trepidation. On the night stand were wads of used tissue. Katy's cell phone was lying among the tissues, along with a lavender envelope with the name "Frances" on it. Her car keys were next to her phone, as were her glasses. Patty looked up, worry enveloping her whole being and headed toward the bathroom.

And there she was. A famous person with everything to live for, hanging from something high in a bathroom of gold faucets and marble sinks, a lovely pink pump clinging tenaciously to one foot; the other having already fallen to the floor, probably making a soft thud as it did.

    Patty screamed.
