    Serial Commas

I'd like to know peoples thoughts on serial commas. I have recently started to use them but it seems there are two schools of thought, with neither necessarily being correct.
Also are there any other style 'choices' that people have found whilst learning the craft?

I have tended to overuse commas in the past even though they may have been technically correct. I now try to keep them to a minimum as too many can interrupt the flow. I use them to avoid ambiguity. If I find a piece of fiction writing requires a lot of commas, I try to write around them.

They are optional unless working within a style guide. In fiction, it's all subjective, but I always use them. No matter what, be consistent.
