    12,000 Miles

    All feedback valued. Thanks.

    Twelve Thousand Miles

Led from the shadow of Misty Law, by a desperate search for more
To Albert Dock with son and daughter and steerage space for four
Across the Ocean to the Hudson, along the rails to the Great Lakes
Milwaukee dock and poorer quarters, such as a stevedore makes

All those miles, all those days
To find a place where the people are the same, the people are the same.

Two urgent tickets Eastward and you clasp your motherís hand
Cholera took your sister, then the docks took your old man
Mother is so broken and so ravaged by the pain
But she says youíve got each other and some-how youíll find a way

All those miles, all those days
To find a place where the people are the same, the people are the same.

Truants donít care, for bed-time prayer, or the sting of the masterís cane.
Fast to the devil and the fights at Beith and Lochwinnoch again.
Sheís mother to another, no space for a brother, so you sign up to serve.
A boy soldier in India where your stepfather canít hurt you.

Twelve thousand miles, so may days
Trying hard to find a better place, just to feel the same, do you feel the same?

They told you to be brutal and they showed you how to drink
You diced away your wages as they taught you want to think
Then marched out from your billet house, they shipped you into France
Friends choking in the mustard gas, blood running through your hands.

Twelve thousand miles, so many days
To find a place where the people are the same, the people are the same.

You work the docks in the biting cold, no shelter from the hills
A Stevedore, like your father, working hard to pay the bills
The nurse was from an English port, sheís mother now and wife.
Youíve no Mother, Dad or sister of your own, but thatís just life.

Twelve thousand miles, so many days
To find a place where the people are the same, the people are the same.
The story's in there. Pass me the knife...

Good lyrics! Are you going to record the song so we can hear the melody?

Awesome shanty! Makes me think of Roll Alabama Roll; I'm hearing it in the voice of Christy Moore of Bellowhead or somebody. And while I don't know what Misty Law is I'm sure it's relevant

Thanks, so much - very much appreciated from you folks. Its not quite there yet, I think. I'm not sure it's personal or relatable enough yet, so any thoughts on that would help.
A stripped back recording is on the cards. Banjo, acoustic guitar and cello maybe.
Gumby. thanks for remembering me. Yes, a while
