    I think there are different levels of "doing well", for one thing. My agent's standard of "exceptional sales" for self-publishing is 10K copies - but that's low to middling sales for a book from a Big 5 publisher. So, yes, I think it would likely be a lateral or even backward step for someone with excellent self-publishing sales to go with a smaller publisher, but not for them to go with a larger publisher. There's also the advance you should get from a Big Five publisher, which shifts a lot of the risk for the publication onto their shoulders - always nice!
