    Could vs. was able - what's the difference?

    Could be a lot of them. Depends on the context. "Could" often denotes a kind of desire - "I could go for a pie right now" or "I could take a walk, maybe" or "I could really fall for you" (said the mountaineer hanging over the edge). Then again, could can indeed denote an ability, in which case I think there may not be a difference really. "Could you draw a man's face?" or "Are you able to draw a man's face?" Like I say, it really does depend, so far as I can see, on the context. Perhaps if you cleared up which, if any, context you're referring to, or is this just general?
