    Turtle in the Driftless

    Turtle in the Driftless

    Outlier, temper trampled,

    stranded--

    A missed White Pelican Flight--

    Stars tarnished and dim,
    as Socks Fox slept,

    clouds

    blown

    to places beyond,

    a sky vulnerable,
    stripped bare.

    But there, to the left,
    something shown.

    There to the left,
    something bright--

    finally,

    something right...

    Velvet bleak
    that naked sky--

    And in it, she shone...

    Turtle--

    Above the raw knuckles,
    a great eastern scar,
    skeletal birch mail,
    sharp against
    the limned bright...

    Steady on, the outlier,
    eyes on the eastern sky,
    left hand lifted,
    to touch,
    to trace...

    a supple softness,
    silvered, fresh pressed
    moonshadows

    Turtle in the Driftless,
    come to take the lost,
    the Outlier, home.

Hope appearing on the horizon... hope is how we survive seas of sorrow... that tiny ray of hope... this is enchanting and a departure from your usual poetic path... thank you for sharing your gorgeous poetry.... I must confess that I am quite biased when it comes to your poetry, I am just one of your most dedicated fans...
She lost herself in the trees,
    among the ever-changing leaves.
She wept beneath the wild sky
as stars told stories of ancient times.
The flowers grew toward her light,
the river called her name at night.
She could not live an ordinary life,
with the mysteries of the universe
    hidden in her eyes....

I have to say that this has an almost holy feel to it, as if something of religious magnitude is happening.

    This:

    Above the raw knuckles,
    a great eastern scar,
    skeletal birch mail,
    sharp against
    the limned bright...
Made me think of seeing something glorious in the sky (a comet being described as an eastern scar) above a mountain range (the raw knuckles) and through the skeletal birch trees, an almost chainmail effect a bright outline. Whether this was what you intended or not, this is what my mind saw and it is beautiful.
There is no life I know
    To compare with pure imagination.

This was great, Darkkin. A magnificent, richly detailed, hopeful, and wondrous poem.

    Excellent work!

Thank you to all who took the time to read. It is always interesting to see what other people take away from a piece. The insights and observations are as interesting as the pieces themselves.

Turtle in the Driftless is a piece very near and dear to my heart. Written on the fly after a 14 hour day at the bookstore. My temper was raw, and I still had to deal with the drive home and the fact that I had not written anything... :/

Driftless is the name of the region where I live due to the geological shifts that occurred during the last Ice Age. The huge bluffs of the river valley loom up on either side, trapping light and diminishing the stars. The sun sets early and rises late because of those bluffs, but there is beauty in the raw stone and tangled woodlands. The birches in particular stand out like the white mail of a paladin. It was an inherent beauty I was blind to that night because I was overtired and mad about nothing in particular.

I got in the car, and started for home when Turtle reminded me of the beauty in the world. Full moon, exploding out of nowhere...bright enough to cast moonshadows. It stayed high and bright on the left side (east) all the way home. Turtle was there, with me in the Driftless and suddenly I wasn't mad anymore.
