You can never hate something so thoroughly as that which destroys what you love, and who is more guilty of this crime than the stranger who was once a lover?

    I Am At Peace

    I Am At Peace

I have held the perfect moment
    and its salvation carries on.
Like a tune where notes once heard
    you cannot forget the song.

    Contentment washes over and
    I've not known anger since.
How can I shame my debtors
    or blame my trespassers hence?

If their barbs had never stung me
and my path were straight and clear,
then I do not doubt it never could
or would have brought me here.

    Without the weight of hatred
    my soul hath serenity
    In happiness I found forgiveness
and all is well with me

Lovely sentiment, andrew! At peace, I'm still getting there.
There is no life I know
    To compare with pure imagination.
    Living there you’ll be free
If you truly wish to be.~ Willy Wonka

    Andrew,
At work so will be brief. You’re poem reinforces that we are the sum of all our parts. Being at peace is a wonderful feeling, I’ve been fortunate to have had that twice in my life. Your poem brouht those times back to me.
"Illegitimi non carborundum " Vinegar' Joe Stilwell

"Faith is taking the first step, even when you don't see the whole staircase." Martin Luther King Jr.

What you learn in life is important, those you help learn, are more important.

"They can because they think they can."
    Virgil

"Wise men speak because they have something to say; Fools will speak to say something." Plato

"The only difference between reality and fiction is that fiction needs to be credible."
     Mark Twain

"To those of you who received honors, awards and distinctions, I say well done. And to the C students, I say you, too, can be president of the United States." George W. Bush

This is a good mantra! Lovely poem

    I enjoyed reading this piece.
The line that stood out was

"Without the weight of hatred ... "

I caught the assonance first, even though the alliteration preceded it.
Both lent great strength to the piece.

    Finding

    Finding

Two silent nods in a frenzied crowd
like sun rays piercing cracks in clouds
A connection sparks and harkens back
to memories that have long been set
in stone and song lest fools forget
lessons learned and then lose track,
and so you speak the verse aloud.

    Your quiet muttering is overheard
The nodding head's speech is slurred,
"I know this from my younger days.
    A shibboleth to denote members.
A tune sang and spoken to remember,
but I cannot place the phrase..."
And so your companion speaks the words.

Their lost confusion you seek to soothe.
"We share history from our youth.
I know not where to begin.
    There is between us familiarity.
Yes, I know you and you know me.
You are no stranger, but my kin."
And so is plain you speak the truth.

A silent look, a smile given, a nod of thanks. Communication can be silent, just as effective, and maybe easier to understand. Very good poem Andrew.

a tough rhyming scheme that was handled very well.

it took a few reads to get the whole poem to flow - but worth it.
grasp the mettle of things unsaid
and strike the nail upon the head

That is a tough rhyming scheme! I'm with ned, there. But you did it well!
