Writing Forums - Us and Them

Although we admit to being the best writing forum on the internet* - and the many reasons for that can be boiled down to a single underlying cause; you, our members - we also admit that we are not the only writing forum on the internet. Other writing forums exist out there, but they are not our competition. It's not Us versus Them, it's Us and Them, together making a broader loose community of people with similar aims: to encourage and support more and better writers and creative works, now and into the future.

For many years, this forum was tangibly supported and sponsored by Lit.org; I have donated to yet another writing forum or two. Some of our most respected members are also highly regarded members of at least one other writing forum.

There have been times when new members have had difficulties with registering or accessing our forum, and most of us won't forget the technical issues and gremlin plagues we've suffered any time soon. There have been times when ideological, philosophical, or personality conflicts have led to eventual partings of ways. The same can be said by any writing forum. We accept that some fits are better than others.

All of this rambling is leading to a simple policy statement: no matter what the provocation or issue, we don't diss other writing forums here.

This is not a ban on venting frustrations etc about a specific incident or incidents; it is a reminder that, just like our discussions and critiques, we should address the act rather than the identity.

*on Google, we currently rank #1 or #2, depending on whether the search is for writingforums or writing forums.

    Self-flagellation, however, is actively encouraged.

But please, no sock puppet self-flagellation. That's just weird.

I speak of this site on the other I am a member of, and the same goes there for here.

I really enjoy both sites and would be hard pressed to pick one or the other if forced to do so. Both have their advantages and I have friends on both.

The only thing I don't do here, or there, is put a name on the other site.

I found both sites using a Google search. The other one cam up first so I went there. Then I searched again and found this one.

I 100% agree with Cran. There is no reason to see other writing forums as competition. No matter which forum(s) we are members of, most of us are out to achieve the same goal.

Drats, and here I was busy writing up a scathing rant about this other site, extremelymeanwritingcritiques.org, where they were REALLY mean to me. I guess that I can't post it here now.

Seriously, there are many great things that I get from these boards (inspiration, guidance, critiques, entertainment, and friendship, for starters). Complaining about other places on the Interwebs just isn't worth the effort here or elsewhere.

I joined up a few others when I first started looking, like mylewdog.org, lewforums.org, and absolutedog.com.

They're all great forums full of solid, excellent writers. Of course they are. But the thing this site has that they don't is the layout and structure, as well as the community. You can get lost on the other sites, feel like you're swimming in stuff, and don't know where to turn, but here on writingforums.com you can get the lay of the land quickly and the staff is most helpful. No diss to anyplace else, but this site is awesome. Thanks to everybody working hard behind the scenes to make it so. The green machine is for real!

It all starts with a name and flows from there. A ridiculous moniker springs to mind and it launches like a multi-lubed slippery-sloop down chutes made of buttery-floops. Down, down, down. We watch, spellbound. Rapturous. Glockenspiel. We do our due diligence with penitence and penicillin. Do what’s due, then dew drops on your moon-pops.

    I second Pluralized's comment.

I went through quite a few sites before I found my way here. This is the only site to which I have been able to stay and return to.

In business, there is a structure that if followed will find success, if not, will not. The primary function of any business is to supply the consumer with what they want and/or need. Whether non-profit, charity or other - supplying what someone needs or wants means providing information on what you have to offer so they know you have what they are after.

Other sites, though many great in their own ways, often lack what I like, want or need personally.
This site however, provides what people want on a more universal scale.
    - Easy to find information
    - Easy direction
    - Staff that know their product
    - A product with high demand (information)
    - A policy procedure that is fair
    ...

I can keep listing. There is little to nothing I can fault this site for...
So whilst I do not complain or name other sites, it is only because I do not use them thanks to this site which has everything I need as far as writing community forums are concerned.

If two companies provided Prawn Cocktail Crisps for free and both were the same distance from my location - I would test both products... after deciding on the one I prefer, why would I ever go back to the other? Sometimes a taster check to confirm the one I am using is still better may be warranted - as I have done since coming here - but I will always go back to the one that provides the best quality goods.

    Edit:

One quick note; Policy that is Fair is highlighted in this thread. Not dissing another forum?
I wonder how many others would be willing to show that kind of integrity....

You guys do realize that most of the comments being made here are passive aggressive attacks on other sites?

    Really?

I thought we were addressing the acts rather than the identity. ^_^

And I was only meriting this sites willingness to go the extra mile - something I have not found elsewhere. Not yet at least.

Read Cran's post, he doesn't single out any specific forum either, he is talking about all of them being a community as a whole. I won't argue the point, but in my opinion I see a lot of passive aggressive statements being made.
