Thread: Favorite Song Verse?

  1. #11
    Tom Petty blue Sunday,

Don't know why but the first time I heard the song I knew the people in it, and lived the song with them.

She took a rolled up twenty out of her pocket
    And paid for my cigarettes
We were friends at first sight in the 7-Eleven light
She said, "Here, let me cover it"

And I rode shotgun all that night
She drove and never made a sound
I asked, if there was anything wrong
She said, "Nothing worth talking 'bout"

Placebo - Every You Every Me

    Sucker love is Heaven sent
You pucker up, our passion's spent
My hearts a tart, your body's rent
My body's broken, yours is bent
Carve your name into my arm
Instead of stressed, I lie here charmed
'Cuz there's nothing else to do
    Every me and every you

Sucker love, a box I choose
No other box I choose to use
    Another love I would abuse
    No circumstances could excuse
In the shape of things to come
    Too much poison come undone
'Cuz there's nothing else to do
    Every me and every you
Every me and every you, every me, he

Sucker love is known to swing
Prone to cling and waste these things
    Pucker up for Heavens sake
There's never been so much at stake
I serve my head up on a plate
    It's only comfort, calling late
'Cuz there's nothing else to do
    Every me and every you
Every me and every you, every me, he
Every me and every you, every me, he

Like the naked leads the blind
    I know I'm selfish, I'm unkind
    Sucker love I always find
Someone to bruise and leaves behind
All alone in space and time
There's nothing here but what here's mine
    Something borrowed, something blue
    Every me and every you
Every me and every you, every me, he

Every me and every you, every me, he
Every me and every you, every me, he
Every me and every you, every me, he

Placebo - Without You I'm Nothing

Strange infatuation seems to grace the evening tide.
I'll take it by your side.
Such imagination seems to help the feeling slide.
I'll take it by your side.
Instant correlation sucks and breeds a pack of lies.
I'll take it by your side.
Over saturation curls the skin and tans the hide.
I'll take it by your side.

    tick, tock [Repeat: x3]
tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tock

    I'm unclean, a libertine
And every time you vent your spleen,
I seem to lose the power of speech,
You're slipping slowly from my reach.
You grow me like an evergreen,
You've never seen the lonely me at all

    I,
Take the plan, spin it sideways.
    I,
    Fall.
    Without you, I'm nothing.
    Without you, I'm nothing.
    Without you, I'm nothing.
Take the plan, spin it sideways.
Without you, I'm nothing at all.

Imogen Heap - Hide and Seek

    where are we?
what the hell is going on?
the dust has only just begun to form
    crop circles in the carpet
    sinking feeling

    spin me round again
    and rub my eyes,
    this can't be happening
when busy streets a mess with people
would stop to hold their heads heavy

    hide and seek
    trains and sewing machines
    all those years
    they were here first

    oily marks appear on walls
where pleasure moments hung before the takeover,
the sweeping insensitivity of this still life

    hide and seek
trains and sewing machines (oh, you won't catch me around here)
    blood and tears (hearts)
    they were here first

    Mmmm whatcha say,
Mmm that you only meant well?
    well of course you did
    Mmmm whatcha say,
Mmmm that it's all for the best?
    of course it is
    Mmmm whatcha say?
Mmmm that it's just what we need
    you decided this
    oooh whatcha say?
    Mmmm what did'cha say?

ransom notes keep falling out your mouth
mid-sweet talk, newspaper word cut outs (paper word cut outs)
speak no feeling no I don't believe you (I don't believe you)
    you don't care a bit,
    you don't care a bit

    (hide and seek)
ransom notes keep falling out your mouth
mid-sweet talk, newspaper word cut outs

    (hide and seek)
speak no feeling no i don't believe you
    you don't care a bit,
    you don't care a (you don't care a) bit

Royksopp - What Else Is There?

It was me on that road
    But you couldn't see me
Too many lights out, but nowhere near here

It was me on that road
    Still you couldn't see me
And then flash lights and explosions

    Road's end getting nearer
We cover distance, but not together

I am the storm and I am the wonder
    And the flashlights, nightmares
    And sudden explosions

I don't know what more to ask for
I was given just one wish

It's about you and the sun
    A morning run
    The story of my maker
What I have and what I ache for

    I've got a golden ear
    I cut and I spear
    But what else is there?

    Roads and getting nearer
We cover distance, still not together

If I am the storm, if I am the wonder
    Will I have flashlights, nightmares
    and sudden explosion?

There's no room where I can go and
    You've got secrets too

I don't know what more to ask for
I was given just one wish
    (Why)

I'm a little late to this party, but the final verse from Time is still my favourite (regardless of how horrible cliche it might be):

And you run and you run
To catch up with the sun
    But it's sinking

    Racing around
To come up behind you again

    The sun is the same
    In a relative way
    But you're older

    Shorter of breath
And one day closer to death

    Every year is getting shorter
Never seem to find the time

Plans that either come to naught
Or half a page of scribbled lines

    Hanging on in quiet desperation
    Is the English way

    The time is gone
    The song is over
Thought I'd something more to say

The first verse in The Decemberist's June Hymn is one of my current favourites. Seriously good lyric writing.

Here's a hymn to welcome in the day,
    Heralding the summer's early sway,
And all the bulbs all coming in,
    To begin,
The thrush's bleating battle with the wrens disrupts my reverie again.

    Pegging clothing on the line,
    Training jasmine how to vine,
Up the arbor to your door,
    And more,
Standing on the landing with the war you shouldered all the night before.

Also get chills listening to the lyrics in the second verse of the same band's tune Won't Want for Love.

Mistlethrush, mistlethrush, lay me down in the afterbrush,
My naked feet grow weary with the dusk.
Willow bough, willow bough, make a bed to lay me down,
Let your branches bow to cradle us.
"If at first you don't succeed, aff wi' the bunnet, and in wi' the heid." - Old Glasgow proverb.

"I'm Looking Through You" - The Beatles

Why, tell me why, did you not treat me right?
Love has a nasty habit of disappearing overnight.
"I don't do anything with my life except romanticize and decay with indecision."

"America I've given you all and now I'm nothing."

"A Hydro-field cuts through my neighborhood
Somehow that always just made me feel good
I can put a spare bulb in my hand
    And light up my yard"

-"Light Up My Yard" by The Barenaked Ladies

I love the imagery. It's also a rather good hook.

Melanie Safka Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)

Lay down lay down lay it all down
    Let your white birds smile
At the ones who stand and frown
Lay down lay down lay it all down
    Let your white birds smile
At the ones who stand and frown

We were so close there was no room

We bled inside each other's wounds
We all had caught the same disease
And we all sang the songs of peace

So raise candles high 'cause if you don't
We could stay black against the night
    Oh raise them higher again
And if you do we could stay dry against the rain

Lay down lay down lay it all down
    Let your white birds smile
At the ones who stand and frown
Lay down lay down lay it all down
    Let your white birds smile
At the ones who stand and frown

    [I]"The world stands out on either side No wider than the heart is wide;
Above the world is stretched the sky, No higher than the soul is high.
    The heart can push the sea and land Farther away on either hand;
The soul can split the sky in two, And let the face of God shine through.
    But East and West will pinch the heart That can not keep them pushed apart;
And he whose soul is flat -- the sky -- Will cave in on him by and by."

    The Band- Whispering Pines

If you find me in a gloom, or catch me in a dream
Inside my lonely room, there is no in between
Whispering pines, rising of the tide
    If only one star shines
That's just enough to get inside
I will wait until it all goes 'round
With you in sight, the lost are found
Foghorn through the night, calling out to sea
Protect my only light, 'cause she once belonged to me
Let the waves rush in, let the seagulls cry
For if I live again, these hopes will never die
I can feel you standing there
But I don't see you anywhere

Standing by the well, wishing for the rains
Reaching to the clouds, for nothing else remains
Drifting in a daze, when evening will be done
    Try looking through a haze
At an empty house, in the cold, cold sun
I will wait until it all goes round
With you in sight, the lost are found

    It's a new dawn,
    It's a new day,
It's a new life for me...

    Try not to get worried
Try not to turn on to
    Problems that upset you
    oh Don't you know
    Everything's alright
    Yes everything's fine
And we want you to sleep well tonight
Let the world turn without you tonight
    If we try
    We'll get by
So forget all about us tonight

Sleep and I shall soothe you
    Calm you and anoint you
    Myrrh for your hot forehead
    oh Then you'll feel
    Everything's all right
    Yes everything's fine
And it's cool and the ointment's sweet
For the fire in your head and feet
    Close your eyes
    Close your eyes
    And relax
    Think of nothing tonight

    Surely you're not saying

    We have the resources
To save the poor from their lot?
    There will be poor always
    Pathetically struggling
Look at the good things you've got!
Think while you still have me
Move while you still see me
    You'll be lost
    You'll be so sorry
    When I'm gone

    Everything's all right

    Yes everything's all right yes

    [I]"The world stands out on either side No wider than the heart is wide;
