Something I always fancied doing...

Rate this Entry
I've always, for as far back as I can remember, fancied walking around the coast of Great Britain. If, I often think, still had my health and strength when I retired, but the more I think about it the more daunting it I think it would be. I mean in GB? With our climate? Society in general? Just finding somewhere to sleep every night. Clean clothes etc. A logistical nightmare.

Could make for one helluva diary though. I love that thought.

I have had similar thoughts about hiking the Appalachian Trail. My grandfather did it when he was over 70 and something inside me says I should do the same
    Map here

    Just under 2,200 miles

A walkabout at seventy. I can think of much worse ways to spend ones seventies. Go for it.

PW, I would love to walk around GB. Start at some random coastal town, walk the coastline all the way round and finish at the starting point. But over here you can't just pitch a tent when and where you feel like calling it a day. And there really are some un-savoury types out there who happily would cripple you for a few coins.
All the same though, if I were to run into a like-minded person, who knows?

    Kevin, I couldn't agree more.

Well, if you make some common-sense compromises, I'm sure you could find routes between towns along the coast (or near as possible). In addition to inns, look at hostels as well. Maybe they'll let an old guy stay? Would a bike be a possibility? That would give you more flexibility.
Remember that cliché on how to eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

I had thought about a push-bike with a small trailer. Just big enough to carry a few things, change of clothes etc. but it's a daunting task. I wouldn't be in any hurry to complete it. I'm not talking about a race here. I wouldn't mind getting to the coast by rail and going around the country hopping on and off buses. I suppose a small rucksack with a few sets of clothes might not be too much of a burden.

It's all food for thought right now. My fantasy.

    Tell you what.....

How about traveling around GB on a free bus-pass?

    How cool would THAT be?
