I noticed someone here mentioned that good writing doesn't always rise to good reading. My definition: Good writing on a topic attracts and holds the attention of a big audience of casual readers and exacting readers interested in the topic. And that accomplished by the writing freshly entertaining the readers and, in my sportswriting case, freshly informing, sometimes by my wonderful wisdom and wit.

However, entertaining and humor writing requires a grown-up writing ear that knows how to deliver with a quick unpredictable punch like a stand-up comic performer. No telegraphing allowed. But originality allowed.

I have never been a sports fan. I grew playing baseball an hockey, played football in high school, boxed and raced motorcycles as an adult, yet watch none of those things as a fan. I have often wondered how people could be so excited about seeing someone else do them. I would love to hear your take on the mind set of a loyal excited fan.

There's only one true sport: the sweet science. Occasionally tennis comes close. Occasionally...

Kevin, you would fit right in with my family. While I have played lots of tennis over the years, I would never call myself a tennis player. My family all play, they are far to serious about it, they compete, go to the matches and talk tennis as though it mattered. My cynical observation anyway. At all family get togethers, tennis is played and old games relived. Maybe you can stand in for me at the next one.

One of my favorite writers is George Will. He could make baseball interesting.
