deer flies

What the hell are these things? I know that they can be particularly bad around horses, but we don't have any near our house. We live in the woods in a deer sanctuary! Hahaha! They are brutal. They orbit your head and then try to bite. It's been raining a lot, so it feels like there are more. Dragonflies like to eat them, which is very exciting to see. I looked up spraying around the yard, but it isn't an effective method to reducing the population. I use Mosquito Bits for the mosquitoes in the area; this seems to be somewhat effective for killing this larva. After spending time on youtube, it seems people are wearing blue hats with tangletrap painted on the top. This method traps the fly, but you look crazy. There are some deer fly strips that you can attach to your hat. I'm still looking into the problem, so I haven't come up with the best solution yet. I think that hat and strip is an easy idea, but wondering how effective. I guess we'd have to try it out. I also have a racket that electrifies the bugs, kind of like a portable bug zapper. This is ok if you are sitting in one place, but I always have kids crawling on me, so I can't use it. I may swat one instead of the fly and send them home with a grid mark across the face. Hard to explain to the parent and worse the State...

Another idea was permthrin, fly net on your hat... Anyone have any ideas? It is kind of consuming my energy and I need to find a satisfying solution.

A few decades back, a young neighbor used his tractor to drag a dead horse that was covered in deer flies. He died a few weeks latter from encephalitis. His wife said he contacted it from a deer fly bite.

That's quite a story! Some people suggested putting raw chicken in a specifically designed jug to attract the flies and hang it by the area they populate. It sort if works, but no doubt these flies like blood and other disgusting things.
