The inspiration supermarket

Those who have read my more whimsical anecdotes will realise that I get a regular supply of inspiration at our local supermarket. My brain is pretty well in neutral as I mindlessly push the trolley around behind my angel and the least thing can fire my imagination. This morning was no different.

Staring idly into the trolley I noticed that a tin of spaghetti in tomato sauce had some round dents in the top, but these appeared to bulge outwards, as though something small had been hammering on the metal from the inside. As we moved further along the aisle I saw that the dents then appeared to bulge inwards as one would expect, so the phenomenon was just the effect of the angle of the lighting, a well-known optical illusion. Nevertheless my empathy for the fictional character inside the tin was growing and I could almost hear his cries for help.

"Help! Somebody help me! I've been wrongly imprisoned with these Italians. I am not Italian. I am an American Navy bean. If you can hear me then please contact the American Embassy."

Well, of course it was an optical illusion, but as I walked along the aisles under the strip lights the dents alternated between bulging inwards and outwards, so either could have been the illusion and either the reality. I thought that perhaps I should investigate a little further.

"Hello seaman. Yes, I think I can hear you. What's your name?"

"Thank heavens. I'm saved. My name is lieutenant Schrödinger."

I wasn't surprised at that. We won't know whether he really exists until my angel opens the tin. I wonder how he will react when he discovers that his rescuer is an angel; with mixed feelings, I suspect.

To be continued ...

Perhaps it would be appropriate to submit the story to the Reader's Digest, if you get my drift, but both the shopping trip and our coffee break are over now and it's time for me to return to reality.

Yes, we all have a flying spaghetti monster trying to get out. It sounds like they have a metamorphic life cycle - their chryaslis stage as a tin.

Was there more than one living thing in that can? If food could talk, huh, lol.
