Depression IV

Rate this Entry
Many experts say that depression is a disease,
it's not your fault. Well, in some cases I'm
convinced you can worry yourself into depression
through self-doubt, poor self-image, and an attitude that if it's not my fault it must be someone else's.

Regardless, self-doubt is one of the most destructive
human failures. I know, because it happened to me.

Medication can help, but not always. If it does, good.
If not, consider other options like counseling. You should learn to help yourself. You should be in charge of your body. One pill on top of another pill on top of another pill only makes big pharm rich.

It must be the theme of the week but I really need this advice. Recently, a few friends told me how I saved them just by being there. Ironically, I've never bothered to save myself.

A major cause of depression is biological. However, this time of year, many suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (ironic acronym SAD). I'd always suggest changing your physical surroundings before medication. A full-spectrum light usually helps, as does a general increase of activity.
It runs in my family. A few are on meds. My uncle killed himself many years ago (messed my mom up something awful).
But yes, lose the self-doubt. You are who you are. And I'm sure there's nothing wrong with who you are. If you need to tweak your seratonin levels just a little, that's no character flaw.

^ What Winston said! The vicious part about depression is that it keeps you out of the mindset that you need to get into if you want to escape it in the first place - at least most of the time - making it very difficult to fight. I mean, how can you hope to win when you've got all this self-doubt?

Everybody's experience and battle is different. But I think the best thing to do is try a variety of different things, some will work and some won't, as well as support one another by helping each other learn how to combat it on their own. And of course, never give up.

I hope to make a post about this very soon. It'll be positive (for once).

Thanks guys. I always recommend a change of scenery. It's difficult to explain. I know I do well in mostly everything I do. I always make the most of every situation. I just never give myself enough credit for whatever I do. I'm sorry to hear your family background. It must take a lot out of you. Just stay strong and breathe throughout every step forward.

I don't know if writers are somehow prone to self-doubt, but you write something and you think it's crap then someone comes along and agrees with you. So maybe it comes with the territory, but I think this forum is good for what ails you. I do see some members here that get defensive and sometimes paranoid. But I agree with the above comments, and getting help doesn't mean you're a failure..

I half disagree. An oppressive system can easily drive someone to self doubt, which can drive someone to anxiety and depression. We are told by society if we get social security, we are being lazy moochers who gave up. We are told by society, if you cannot work for yourself and have a job, you are an unsuccessful failure. Society creates this vortex sometimes of negativity that can even push into someone's psyche. Driving them towards these dark wells.

Modern society, technology advanced but dominated by oligarchs who want to control what is to them is a population of rabble and sheep, can indeed cause a variety of psychological and physical problems. I may sound like I have paranoid delusions, but I do wonder if we are being controlled and don't even realize it. The pesticides in our crops, the additives in our foods, pollution of the air and water, whether deliberate or not, I believe is bound to affect our bodies, our minds.

You have to be cautious with a view like that midnight. When dealing with belief and dealing with things we believe in we always have to make sure we have a check involved as well. You did say you had paranoid delusions. And some of that does sound more like paranoid delusions of granduer. Than they do actual equate to anything. However, you are true about control and manipulation in advertisements and sponsor content.

I agree with midnight to an extent. I think that we are definitely heavily influenced by advertisements, news, and media. They walk a fine line between influence and control. If they outright tried to control us, we all know that wouldn't fly. So, like sheep, they herd and guide.

I can say from my own experience that this has negatively effected me.

It's a tough one to crack.
I don't have the will to deal with it.
Better the devil you know i reckon.
I just keep myself to myself and live ( if you can call it that ) from day to day.

    But hey!
Good luck to you triers eh?

Some very good points aired in the above comments.

All i will say is that i look forward to legalised assisted suicide. Well yes, i know, it's legal now, depending upon which country you are in and how much money you have.

I would just like to react to those who would say "What about the loved ones that are left behind after a suicide to picking up the pieces?"

Well what about the poor sod who just couldn't go it with this world?
Be glad/happy for them, that he, or she, finally made it. Celebrate for chris' sakes. Raise a glass or three.

    What's so bad about death?

I'm sorry, no offence intended, but i do feel very strongly about this.

A lot of people think they're not worth saving. If I could have only two words which would stay with people forever it would be: YOU MATTER, because you do. Every individual is worthy enough (except people who did heinous crimes, but that's not the topic), and every individual means a lot to world. Maybe your environment hasn't recognized it, but I want you to know that there's a bunch of people here who nurture kind friendships, and care about each other. Care about YOU. It's not a shame to reach for the hand of understanding, salvation.

Midnight, I know it's not easy for you - you, as the Prinze, and all other members, have our support. You are a wonderful member, and a kind, gentle member we all love.

    YOU ALL MATTER.

Thanks, Schrody. One of the reasons I wrote this series of blogs was because I thought my experiences would help others. I've managed to get a handle one my depression, but I see from recent posts that a lot of others are still wrestling with the problem.

Take care, I'm sure you know it's a harsh world out there. It's hard to retain optimism but I haven't given up trying.

Yes, it's hard to be positive and optimistic in this world, and I know there's good and bad days, but when the bad thoughts gather like stormy clouds above your head, just remember you have friends here who like you, and care about you. I'm glad that you're holding up, and you said the most important thing - never give up
