  1. SUBMISSIONS - ALMOST THERE!

So just a little blog entry as to what I've been up to. I have finished my poetry submissions for two anthologies and working on the contests now, deadline of July 15th. I'm almost through with my time/writing crunches. Whew! I've become the president of the local poetry club of Florida State Poets Association, and that's keeping me hopping, working on growing the membership and organizing meetings and so forth, all to be virtual. The unfortunate byproduct of this pandemic is I am becoming agraphobic ...
  2. QUICK ENTRY - UPDATE

So, I've been MIA for a while, here's a quick update. Lot's going on, the pandemic and one would think I would have lots of time seeing as I'm home all the time, boy you couldn't be more wrong. Working on 2 art pieces for ekphrasic poetry, made the artwork, seems those were easy, the poems, eh, not so much. These are for submission for an anthology that I have to turn in 3 poems for which will have to be ready within the next few weeks. Almost ready for that. Another anthology submission requires ...
  3. Submissions for Poems to Mayo Clinic - You Can Submit Till May 12th!

So instead of a blog, I'm working on a project collecting Cheerful, inspiring, uplifting poems or saying for the healthcare workers at Mayo Clinic here in Jacksonville, FL. I'm opening it up to anyone here at the Writing Forums if you make it here to my blog site I guess......... Not sure where else it might be appropriate to post this...... I have the submission details on my poetry chapter website for all those details, so I'll save it by referring you there. www.northfloridapoetryhub.org ...
  4. It's April, and Spring and COVID abounds.......

So from the depths of social distancing, and isolation I write from my window of laptop screen. I am alone in my apartment and have been for weeks now. I know I haven't been on the forums, and it would seem little excuse for being absent, but my attention has been elsewhere and my inspiration has been about nill for words and poetry. I have finally seen the other side of my recovery from eye surgery, thank God. My eyes no longer bother me like they did, and I am able to pretty much see and ...

  5. I'm back from nowhere..........

So.... I'm back. It's been rough. My eyes, well enough about that. They are getting better. Slowly. My puppy, who hasn't been doing well passed away last Thursday. I had to put her to sleep. She isn't/wasn't really a "puppy", she was an about 12 year old give or take Chuhuahua with advanced heart disease and I've had her on hospice for months now and finally had to put her to sleep. So it's been a rough weekend. I'm okay and working on this new art/poetic project so that helps, ...
  6. Frustrated in Florida..............

So here it is February 22 and I'm still recooperating from my second cataract surgery. I haven't been on the forums much because I am suffering badly from dry eye and my time on the computer has been restricted very much. I have also been distracted mentally and therefore haven't felt very inspired either. I have always been a writer who uses her fingers to help with the "flow" of creativity, not being able to write quickly enough to keep up with my thoughts. So, not being able to ...
  7. Haven't been around much in January

So, I haven't been around much in January..... I had the first cataract surgery on the 7th of January and my vision has been poor, because one eye is blurry and if I wear my glasses to correct that vision the now "good" eye is out of focus because the corrective lens throws the vision out of wack on the post-cataract implanted lens eye, and no, popping the lens out of the glasses doesn't work well as my lenses are progressives and I get double vision from trying to see out of them that ...

  8. Dropped Out of Site

So I've been MIA for a while, my puppy hasn't been well, she has advanced cardiac disease and I've been nursing her and have been preoccupied, she's better now on a new medication. I also was scheduled for cataract surgery (which I postponed to January because of all the things going on with my puppy) and and emotional roller coaster I have been on. Not a good time to deal with eye surgery, and all that goes with it for me, which is the handicap of not being able to see well or being able to drive ...

So today was a fabulous day in Jacksonville - we had a literary book and author's festival of sorts - many authors and poets came and brought their new books, launched their newly published works, did readings, shared their work, their joy, congratulations, Women Writing for (a) Change - FABULOUS! new anthology: (a) River Rising............. 10. Poems and Poetry

So I've been writing, reading, critiquing and doing re-writes of poetry, attending writing groups, participating in open mic's, talking to other poets about their poetry and writing assignments, dreaming about poetry, reading books about how to write poetry, reading books about how to write, eating poetry (oops, got carried away there with poetry). Yup, once you start eating the poetry perhaps you're taking things a bit too far and it's time for a breather. Watch some Netflix. Seriously, I haven't ...
  11. FINALLY GETTING SOMEWHERE - HURRICANE HELL

So, I seem to be getting somewhere with my hurricane poems. I have been writing drafts and trying to hit the topic from different angles, cutting (let me try some of the cute little icons here) drilling away at the words immersing myself in the subject..... Think I have made some headway. Along this sojourn I have had a few sideline poems pop up in surprise always a welcome!

So, in between my continuing reading of the adventures of Kate ...

  12. WORKING ON HURRICANE POEMS

So, I'm working on my hurricane poems. Yes, I know it doesn't look like I am, but I am. grrr Really hard to take the steps back (or should I say steps forward) and get INTO the scene, not be the observer. For me, it has always been easier that way. Perhaps I'm more a writer than I thought. So this is what came out of my frustration.

    THE BUSINESS OF POETRY

    Hands poised over the keyboard,
    tapping letters, forming words,

  13. HURRICANES, UNEXPECTED TWISTS AND AFTERMATHS

I keep watching updated news reporters with their interviews of what is going on in the Bahamas and Abacus. I have been torn up over the whole thing. Living in Florida I have been in many storms, nothing like this, but hurricanes, tropical storms and such so I know what it is like to see and hear the roaring fury of the wind and rain.

I was in South Florida when Hurricane Andrew went through Miami, and the devastation was shocking there, similar to what happened in the Bahamas but ...
  14. Poem for the Victims in the Bahama's --- Anonymous Video Hell

I wrote this today after needing to express the agony I feel watching and empathizing with those poor souls in the Bahamas. My heart is breaking and wrenched for all of them, the people, the island, the animals, birds, even the little bugs, decimated by this storm from the depths of Hell.

  15. HOME AGAIN, HOME AGAIN, JOGGITY, JOG an author's winning the game............

So, got home on Tuesday night...... picked up the puppy Wednesday, maintenance crew in the apartment building decided to clean my A/C ducts while I was gone and left a royal mess so after being gone a whole week got the pleasure of having to clean my entire apartment all over again, vacuuming, mopping floors, washing the kitchen and bathroom down. FINALLY got all that done, bills paid, and wallah! We have a hurricane on the horizon folks! Dorian is out side, wanting to knock on the door and visit ...
  16. FAMILY AND FAMILY REUNIONS - WHERE WE COME FROM - WHO WE ARE

So, time for a family reunion in Upstate New York. Airplane ride yesterday starting with an early rising at 4 a.m. to make a 7:20 flight out of Jacksonville, Florida landing in Albany, New York at noon. So, some call it a vacation (?) it's really a family reunion and for me, eh, more of an exercise in anxiety overload and family drama re-enactment Scene 3000. Where's my Xanax?

So off to scenic New York and the Baseball Hall of Fame country. Baseball camp is in the tail-end of ...
  17. BLACKOUT POETRY SATURDAY

First Saturday of the month is Blackout Poetry day. If you don't know what that is, here's the gist: Poets gather at a coffee shop (okay, you don't have to gather with poets, you can go solo at home LOL), grab a torn out page from a book, find words that make a poem and then black out the rest of the words. This is a fun activity for me, one I look forward to every month. Sometimes you get a page that works out really well and surprises you at the twists and turns the words take, but most of ...

  18. Open Mic Magic With The Ancient City Poets

So today was the Monthly Ancient City Poets Open Mic Poetry Reading. Summer Daze was the theme. I read my poem "The Beach and The Bay", which is currently out for contest with FSPA (so I won't be putting it here in my post), but it was well-received. A fun poem about hot, sunny days at the beach, picnics, sand castle building and dreams of whimsy, dragons and playful sweetness.

So many talented poets and writers were there today from all over Northern Florida. ...

  19. Another Saturday, Time for Writing

So, yes, I am supposed to be working on a poem for tomorrow's reading at a local monthly poetry reading. I have several poems ready but thought I would try my hand at some more. We'll see. Seems so far all I'm accomplishing is some computer time here. Noon already. It's been a busy week with appointments and fighting the Florida humidity, missed doctor appointments (showed up on the wrong day) then a make-up appointment, tore my money order by mistake so had to do a re-run and get a refund ...
  20. Disaster! Computer flashdrive failure!

So, my backup flashdrive failed and I have lost a considerable amount of valuable data, irretrievable. Disaster! I normally have backup on backup but due to events this last year, I lapsed on that habit and didn't follow through this one time. Of course, that's when failure of the drive you didn't think would fail does.... So, on top of getting a summer cold and catching up on life after my writing marathon for the contests, wrapping those up and sending them off, I haven't been on this site ...
  21. Poetry Marathon Over

So, the marathon is done, poems organized and submitted. Whew! That's an accomplishment and a task that I am relieved is over. So now the reprieve and time to relax some. It was a good run, but now back to the regular routine. I do have to get back into that. However, one more hurtle is that I've come down with a summer cold, ugh. Feel crummy and I wanted to get back on the wagon with buzzing around here not that I'm done with the contest entries and writing poems for that. I'm gonna ...
  22. Oh No, The Lights Went Out!

So, the switch has been flipped off and I'm back to scratching my head again. It was a grand run of inspiration running amok, but now my head has stopped buzzing and the bumping is gone. Woe is me. But, I did get seven amazingly good poems out of it, which is really saying something considering most of my really good poems take years to develop. What can I say? But I attribute a lot of the light switch going on to doing the research on the internet on what is good poetry, thinking ...
  23. Another Day In The Neighborhood

........ Well, this past day and a half have been amazing! I finally have had a poetry breakthrough from my blockage. It seems that the dam has broken and the waters are welling out in a torrent. I have been able to plug into the creative process with relative ease. I am opening clean pages and the words are forming lines and stanzas almost as if on their own. I've opened the thesaurus and rhymer and verses are flowing. It's almost as if they been hiding in the recesses of my mind all ...
  24. Day 2 at the Forum

Okay, so MAYBE spending too much time here nosing around and getting to know how things work instead of focusing on actually writing poetry. So off I go to my haiku calculator (yes, I have one of those, makes it easier to focus on the words than the syllables (anyway for my brain). It's actually just a spreadsheet with spaces for the words where I put the syllables for the number of syllables, not a cheat sheet where a program inserts words (wait, would that kind of computer program actually exist?) ...

  25. New member as of last night, my first blog post

So, officially a new member of this writer's site. Glad to be here. I've tried a few other sites like this but have found them time-wasters because they didn't have organized instructions on how to use the functions and the site structure itself was not intuitive to use and from my experience there wasn't really any on-line help available. Not so here, so I'm giving you a try. So far impressed.

Now, on to the good stuff. So, I'm looking forward to having a place to get honest, constructive, ...
