  1. Glen and Stu Reshape America - The Stand ** SPOILERS

There's a scene I found disturbing in Stephen King's "The Stand"- especially considering today's context.

It is when Glen and Stu are sitting together and alone and Stu asks Glen- a former sociologist of the Old World before the plague hit- what is to come and what is to be done about it.

    ** SPOILERS

What follows is pretty shocking...to me, at least. In the same breadth that Glen talks about the need to recreate the American spirit, he straight-away ...

  2. Communication Itself is Catharsis

I didn't realize it at first, but I am who I am- a person that can be quite to the point of unnatural at times.

Because of this I'm well aware of the anxiety and comfort people have when being in the same space with a person that does not communicate. It's strange to the point where you realize that having a quiet person in the same room with you is worse than being alone in the same room.

The last one made me wonder a bit, and the only thing I could come up with is that ...

  3. More Rant than Reality: Why Music is "Zit" and Politics Should Q**t

    * If you don't know what I mean by "zit"...think about it...

For a while I've been turned off by music. I used to think it has something to do with my general estrangement to society (and that's true), but it's also because when I read the lyrics, most of the time it made no sense. It's a hodge-podge of loosely connected ideas seemingly glued together by a general theme- the hook- and/or the listeners interpretation of the song.

But I also hated how vapid most ...

  4. The Soldier

For obvious reasons the soldier is one of the most iconic and romanticized figures in, perhaps, every civilization.

The soldier is necessary to defend the realm of it's owners. The soldier is necessary to defend the people who work on that property. The soldier is one of the few places a man can go to and legally exercise the primal energy nature has instilled in him for millennia.

The iconic soldier is strong, persevering, dedicated, and follows- what I call- the philosophy ...

  6. I'm Not Going To The Theater Ever Again

    Jordan Peele's "Us" is crap.

    Crap.

How the hell did it get so much praise? I thought all those superhero movies were bad, but at least they had a coherent story.

"Get Out" wasn't even that good. It was kinda lame in a way as well, but it was a much better attempt. Didn't deserve the praise it got, but it was the directors first movie and a promising step. But I guess that's what you get when you praise crappy work.

    There ...

  7. The New Savages?

I was listening to the news- or quasi-news- that is the Daily Show (no, I don't watch this show because it's almost nakedly biased, but my brother watches it and I can't save him) and there was a section where they are talking about Westerners who join ISIS and how evil and misguided it is.

And then a thought slipped into me head...

Many of the slanders they use against ISIS are the same slanders they used against Native Americans- a people with a very sympathetic circumstance ...

  8. Hike Planned :)

Sometimes I sit at my computer and I scroll through images of places I never saw before and the most jaw-dropping and inspiring are the natural things I never seen before. Things like different types of plants and animals that look so alien but cool and yet I never ever heard of them. It's at these times I realized that I know the traditional pantheon of animals taught in schools but the world really is so much bigger. Actually, no. It's not that the world is bigger, it just has much more depth ...

    I could be wrong...

But I believe that if we walk down deep enough into the cave of "I" we find a door sealed by "I" to protect "I" from the frictions of the world.

And behind this door is the most unique expression of madness- the elemental and unadulterated core of the human soul.

Art is an interesting thing because it's the negotiation between expression and appreciation...or at least recognition. Human beings need ...

  10. If I Was A Viking...

If I were a Viking I think Id be spending most of my life trying not to be one...

Real Vikings were people forced into the sea by the diminishing prospects within their own homeland. Vikings likely loved the spoils of being a Viking, but hated being a Viking. They raided and pillaged so they could get enough spoils that they no longer had to.

The biggest gangsters, pirates, mobsters... they usually find a way to go legit as quickly as possible, or they become as quasi-legit ...

I'm not sure why I like to sit down and cruise through Google Earth- satellite view...but I do.

And I was doing just that when I realized something pretty basic? Not sure if this one of those things you're supposed to know in...like...kindergarten...but I noticed all the earth's dry land seems to be squeezed into one side of the globe.

Just made me curious as to why. I imagined the land like the weight at the end of a swinging chain. As the earth cools it's also spinning ...

  15. What's In A Name (Red Rising Spoilers)

I think it might be a symptom of how some of my favorite books are written that I'm beginning to pay attention to every little thing.

This morning I had a "wait a minute" moment where I was thinking about the series "Red Rising" by Pierce Brown and a question popped into my head. Why did the author choose the words "Red Rising" for the name of the series?

After a while I came up with the idea that the most fitting explanation is that the "Red" ...

  16. A Moment in Time

    Apathy is my dark-winged angel.

It's not like a stone on the chest or back, but a stone within the very person, making every movement so much harder. It is a gravity that brings one low eventually and inevitably- no matter how high one is brought. Eventually, it becomes not only a force of nature...but a law of nature.

No matter how happy I am, time will rob me of this joy come tomorrow.

I get up with the sun and I wash. I eat. I clip and cut myself and put ...

  17. Will and Passion

This might be a small thing, but I couldn't stop thinking about the two, as if they were somehow important...

Specifically, the difference between the two.

They seem similar, but willpower seemed to be the mental push towards ones goal. Drive, usually against opposition, including, at times, yourself. But passion seemed to be emotional attraction to a desire. With passion, you don't need to be pushed, you are drawn in despite your will.

A person who can drive ...

  20. I Wonder...

If the modern scheme in storytelling is that the author writes half the book and the ending. He introduces obscure mysteries, gives half the answers, ends the story, and then generates three decades of controversy where fans compete to flesh out parts unsaid with constant speculation and theories.

In such a way a story is as enduring as the idea of God because we know so little, but believe in it so strongly and deeply, that we create the God we seek more than we find it.

  22. Horror, Fiction, and Humanity

The unsettling nature of a good horror movie is something that seems almost like the Holy Grail of movies- extremely rare and extremely rewarding. To date, I can't remember any movie that really ticked the horror box for me. The last one I could remember that was genuinely terrifying to me was "The Exorcist".

But horror and fiction? Now that's a lovely pair.

I like Stephen Kings work. I like the fact that he's not necessarily flamboyant with his horror. His horror ...

We sometimes believe we see time travelers...

Sometimes we want to be time travelers...

But aren't we all time travelers?

Some may go fast and some may go slow, but we all move with the flow of time.

Isn't it funny how those who want to go back in time create so many problems for those in the future, and those who go into the future are able to see the problems that resulted from the past? It's almost as if, in a subtle way, the stories of time ...

  24. The Philosophy of the Decision: Thanos and Gamorah

    Quick intro...

Thanos is basically an interstellar tyrant who has been moving across the universe enacting his idea of balance by reducing the populations of existence by half wherever he goes. He, apparently, is trying to realize this ambition for all of creation. I guess he figured out there's no way he's going to accomplish this in his lifetime leap-frogging from galaxy to galaxy, so he seeks tokens of power called the "Infinity Stones". They're supposed to give a person ...

  25. Trying to Sound Out Morality

The strangest thing to me when writing was realizing that, potentially, morality does not matter.

It does not matter whether a thing is good or evil because people don't really care about that unless they, themselves, or the people they truly care about are being directly victimized by it or directly threatened by it.

Case in point, some people glorify, idolize, or lionize mobsters. These are particularly cruel, brutal people. They tend to have their own codes, ethics, ...
