  1. Trump's America

The KKK is ecstatic (they endorsed Trump, meaning they felt the words, attitudes and policies of Trump were in line with the goals of white supremacy), Al Qaeda and ISIS are rejoicing on social media, civil rights leaders are devastated, minorities and LGBT persons are terrified, violence against Muslims is already being reported, and women are afraid to even wear the hijab in public. Calls to suicide prevention hotlines spiked to unprecedented numbers.

That last bit? One woman wrote ...

  2. Tolkien and Cliches and Come on People, Please

PSA: The plot of a dashing young hero who turns out to be exceptionally powerful with magic and skilled at arms being the Chosen One to face off against the Dark Lord is not derivative of Tolkien. That plot appears nowhere in The Lord of the Rings. Frodo is not the Chosen One.

Frodo, the main protagonist of LotR, is a short, portly, middle-aged man possessing no magical abilities of his own, nor martial skill. He journeys to an evil land to destroy the Ring and with it the Dark Lord. ...

  3. Charity in Argumentation

People are far too interested in what the other says, rather than what the other intends.

I see this play out everywhere, be it in discussion on the internet, or real life conversation. Person A makes Statement X, and Person B goes on a rant about how ridiculous Statement X is, only for Person A to break the bad news that Person B has badly misinterpreted Statement X. The result is wasted time and wasted breath.

It happens constantly. I'd feel comfortable saying the vast ...

  4. If You Don't Love Lists Then You are Probably S-Q-U-A-R-E

So a recent post here has reminded me of one of my great loves, and inspired me to write an [admittedly pointless] blog about it. What is this mystery conqueror of my affections?

    Lists.

Yep. I love lists. Making them, reading them, having them presented to me in visual and/or animated format (God bless YouTube). I love it all. You know the clichéd image of a wealthy individual bathing in a swimming pool full of money? No thanks, not for me.

    Oh, what’s that? ...

  5. On Leaving Video Games Behind and Bob Goff

I think truly growing up looks different for everyone. Your childish may be my adultish, or vice versa. I don’t mean physically growing up, but rather the sense pertaining to maturity. And what is mature for you and I will differ depending on where it is we want to go in life. Recently I decided I wanted to grow up, and for me that meant putting away the video games.

I love video games (well, at least I love some video games) and think they can be a legitimate passion around which ...

  6. Thoughts on Yuri Kochiyama, The Pope, MLK, and... Genghis Khan?

Today Google chose to honor the late Yuri Kochiyama on what would have been her 95th birthday. I must admit, though I am a student of history, I knew very little of her (which I will choose to blame on my disinterest in modern history as a whole). My knowledge could basically be summed up as “wasn’t she that human rights lady who also supported terrorists?” So when I saw her portrait on my front page this morning I was intrigued, and skimmed her Wikipedia article to make sure I had the right woman ...

  7. So Confuse

Today I met someone who believes it is impossible for a theist to accept theism as true based on logic. No, I do not mean he simply found any arguments for theism unconvincing. That would have been just fine by me. He quite literally believed that there are zero arguments--even bad ones--used by theists as a basis for their beliefs. I am not exaggerating. I went through great pains, and great lengths of time, to make sure I was understanding him correctly.

In the end I asked him: "You ...

  12. Daily Haiku

I've decided to try to write a haiku a day because it seems to be the cool thing to do. Plus, it's a not-too-difficult way to feel like I have achieved something.

I'll probably be taking the term "haiku" very broadly. What of it?

    Day 1:

    Fours years in limbo
    for a fruitful later life.
    All could end today.

  13. Don't mind me, just being a drama queen

Time for some impromptu cathartic release of !!!EMOOOOOOTIOOOOOOONS!!! because if I don't get this out of me I'll never be able to study.

So it's exam week at my university, and it's all finally hitting me. No, not the studying and all-nighters and other academic stuff. I'm perfectly okay with those. But the people leaving part is wrecking me right now. I myself am only a junior, but most of my friends are seniors and we are a very, VERY close-knit bunch. When this week is over, almost ...

  14. Some minor ranting followed by guilt

    First the minor rant:

I need to voice some frustrations about a particular aspect of our society. Luckily, none of the people I have encountered on this site fit into the type that I'm raging against (many, I would wager, are actually on the opposite end of the spectrum, and I am all for that) so just know that none of this is directed towards any of you. Unless you are that kind of person I am talking to and just haven't shown your colors here yet. Then you should feel shame.

  15. Future

I'm not sure this post is going to be all that exciting or meaningful or substantial. I'm just letting some thoughts flow.

I seriously am totally lost as to where I am headed in the future in terms of career. I have so many interests and careers that I would like to pursue, but I can't choose between them. Sometimes I really want to do international development work, other times I want to do something more along the lines of To Write Love On Her Arms (an organization that you should ...

  16. Just Letting it Out

Every once in a while, in a coffee shop or a library or wherever I may find myself passing the time as a passive observer of the world of humanity, I see that one individual. That one person who inexplicably outshines everyone and everything around her. She doesn’t beg for attention, nor even seem to want it, but she has it. Or, at the very least, she has one world—my world—entirely revolving around her, if only for a brief moment in the afternoon.
She seems to emit a light, ...

  17. Just Letting it Out

Closing the door behind me, I maneuver through the mess of shoes cluttering the entryway. I manage to find a space to put my own and start down the short hallway, nearly rolling my ankle on a stray slipper. The sound of laughter and excited chatter grows louder, and as I turn the corner I am met with a blast of greetings from a group of friends scattered about the living room floor.

My stomach flutters. She is there.

    You’d think after ...

  18. Just Letting it Out

So, I have these things I wrote simply for the sake of catharsis. I'm not putting them in the prose boards because 1) I'm not really interested in having them critiqued, and 2) I wouldn't actually expect anyone to suffer through them. The first I did post on a thread somewhere, but I'll put it here anyways to keep them together.

I must warn you, mushiness lies within. Turn back now before it's too late.

She hasn’t the slightest clue how beautiful ...
