  1. The Burger Half-Eaten

My father-in-law is getting better. He is old, and sick, but he chose to live. He kept fighting.

Many would look at him, and write him off. My family did wonder if it was "his time". But we respected HIS wishes. He did not want to die.

After his massive infection, and loss of 1/4 of his body weight, Jim stopped eating. What he did choke down, he threw-up. Our marvelous "Obama Care" system only took about a month to run the tests to discover the ...

  2. Close Enough

I am nearly sick. Physically ill. Most people have the emotional depth and maturity of a potted plant.

Why is it OK for people to become flippant when they hear that an old person is near death?
Tell someone a parent is ill. Usually the first question is "why?', but the second is invariably "How old are they?" If a person is at or past a predetermined age, there is a big sigh. Perhaps a nod, or a shrug. The context, the hidden message is "It's OK that ...

  3. Need

    Just a minor rant:

Does anyone in the "developed world" have a true understanding of the concept of a 'need'?

There is so much unhappiness, because people WANT what they do not have. The problem is that they lie to themselves and say that they NEED something.

Let me cut right to it. If you are totally alone, destitute, with no hope of improvement... you can be happy. If you choose to be. Stop looking at others as some kind of ridiculous, masochistic ...

  4. Death

Persons just slightly younger than me often bemoan losing a grandparent. I lost my last grandparent (my grandmother) over 25 years ago.
Both of my parents died before my 50th birthday.

it's like I can hardly remember having an elder to look up to. Guidance. Re-assurance. I feel like I've been on my own for a long time. I feel old.

My In-Laws serve as surrogates. Tales of post WW2 Europe: Germany bombed-out... The Marshall Plan and Eisenhower's austerity... ...

  5. Two Mintes of Hate

Everyone wants to be right. Factually, morally, correct. There's a certain contentment with being right. And it often degrades into smugness.
Of course, if you are right, someone else is wrong. Now, They are The Other.
Since They are wrong, they are less than you. Derogatory labels are flung about such as "uninformed", "closed-minded" and "bigoted". Those that are wrong are not only factually in error, but they are morally dangerous. They are a threat ...

  6. Civil War (couple 'o bad words)

First off, I like my job. I enjoy getting out of that cramped, stuffy storage basement into the crisp air of the loading dock. I zip along on our forklift, breathing in deep the damp ocean breeze. I occasionally stop, and wave at some "cubicle monkey" starting their day hours after mine. We're on the same team. Mostly.

But my workspace is cramped. Too cramped. We all know it, and have complained about it. It's so bad, it is a safety hazard. The desk jockeys upstairs ...

  7. Chicken Little Grow Up

I'm not young anymore, and I never remember when we all got along. In fact, we never had.

But now, it's all "the world is going to end" bull feces. Get over it, and your over emotional self. Set down your torch, throwing rock and inane, worthless protest sign. Your outrage and tantrums will change nothing. It's mental masturbation. And it's making you blind.

Because if you open your eyes, there is good news.

Many of you want to have it both ...

  8. Keep Your Head Down

I'm all full of pessimistic Doom and Gloom on a normal day. But for everyone in The U.S., November 8th may be a good day to call in sick. And maybe the next day or two after that.

This has been an emotional, contentious time and it will only boil over after half of the nation doesn't get their candidate elected. Things won't be bad in the suburbs or countryside, but for God's sake, I'd avoid every major city for a day or two. At the very least, you're looking at city centers and ...

  9. Broken Spring

That digital vomit known as Wikileaks just spewed forth an other tasty tidbit.

A Hillary Clinton adviser was upset at the "backwardness" of The Catholic Church, and lamented that they were not more progressive (i.e. in-line with liberal Democratic policies).
The advisor thought there needed to be a "Catholic Spring", akin to that "Arab Spring", that went so well (sarcasm).

Disclaimer: I'm not Catholic. I don't like their doctrine, ...

  10. Physical and Fiscal

First off: It nuts me up that so many people get these mixed up.
    Now, a bit on each:

A majority of the folks I work with are aged between 40 and 60 years. A higher than average number of them are physically messed-up. It's not like I'm violating anyone's HIPAA rights in knowing this. At a casual glance I see canes, orthopedic shoes, leg splints and smell the fragrance of Ben Gay. Most of my co-workers are retired military, now working on their second retirement. Their previous ...

So, that new Samsung 7 just ignites during charging? You couldn't wait to get THAT? Now, you have to wait in line to get a less incendiary model.
And, just what was wrong with your previous phone?

Probably nothing. Most folks today just have to have the newest, "best" of everything. Since every human consumer with a net worth over $1,000 Dollars now owns major appliances, vehicles and $30k in debt, they must be sold MORE. OMG! Even water has to have stuff added ...

  12. "Round The Homestead

The garden was a bit over-run with weeds, but I was able to thin them out so the vegetables could breath. We had a bunch of carrots, but I keep having a problem with the potatoes (small, few in quantity, but edible). The peppers are flavorful, but not too spicy (chopped and roasted on nachos last night). My wife chopped and blanched the carrots for future use, after we sampled a few of course. Fresh veggies from the garden are tough to beat. We've got more out there to harvest and preserve. ...

  13. Not So Bright

(I may have hit on this before, but it bears repeating)

Have you seen these cool ads for the ultra bright flashlights? They tout how you can use them as a defensive tool to "blind an attacker"?

This is a dangerous bunch of BS.

In a dark environment (like, your house at night), it's true that any bright light will disorient someone. The fact is, however, the light reflected off your walls will also affect your night vision. Is the attacker alone? ...

  14. Husky Band Day

Yesterday I chaperoned my son's band to the University of Washington. The University was hosting what they called "Husky Band Day", where they invite dozens of Puget Sound area high school bands to play with their college band. It was fun, but exhausting. We, by far, had the largest band with 140 students. Luckily, the kids self-manage well and they need minimum supervision.
The total amount of musicians on the field was over 3,000. I could lie and say how well they played, ...

  15. The End of Evolution

Just waxing philosophical, with more thoughts than facts. I remember the old George Carlin bit about The Earth "wanting" plastic bags. That's why we evolved (or were evolved) by Earth / Gaia. Now that The Earth has the plastic bags it needs, it no longer has any use for us. Bye-bye.

That's what always got me about the ultra-left socialist green types. We're supposed to "save the planet"... for whom? Odds are we'll go out in a blaze of glory in the next few ...

  17. That Happened?

This week was so bad, in so many ways, part of me just wants to think none of it happened.

Orlando, Florida? I can't, and won't say any more about that.

Two cops killed by a terrorist in their Paris suburb home? While their three year old child watched? Not in a sane universe.

  18. Too Comfortable

This new job is almost exactly what I expected. And that's a problem.

I'm so used to being lied to, abused, mislead and generally mistreated by my former employers. It's usually subtle, causing a stress build-up and general crappy quality of life.

However, this job is almost too good.
I'm never forced to work overtime. I earn a copious amount of time off AND I can actually use it! We all get three hours of paid time to work out during the week. I'm treated ...

My wife read a story detailing how one of Obama's kids is going to Harvard, or some such snooty school. American Royalty. Hillary's kid is set for life, with all their connections. And we all know about the Bush oligarchy. But they all work so hard for those perks, right? Right.

For the longest time I tried to get a job at the Navy shipyard nearby. My resumes were not looked at. The few interviews I had produced no offers. Years went by. I was really disillusioned.

Last year, I was finally hired. The position doesn't pay great, but it's a living wage. And the benefits are outstanding. My working conditions can be uncomfortable, but are generally not bad.

Since my hiring, I found out more about some of the jobs I applied for. It turns out ...

It often seems like the world is lead by adolescent pyromaniacs.
They stand in a dry grass field with gasoline and matches. By the grace of God, they haven't burned the whole thing down. Yet.

Sometimes it's a bit overwhelming, so it's easy to dismiss. One day, though, when the whole field goes up, it will be too late.

    Just a quick rant:

What is up with every TV commercial embedding a tiny "Do not attempt" disclaimer at the bottom of the screen?!

May as well finish it with:

"You are part of a failed society that is clumsy, stupid and brainwashed. You're risk-adverse because you're all perpetual children with no common sense. 24. Frustration and Apathy

In the 1980's (before many of you were born) there was a big scandal regarding the United States dealing weapons to Iran to free hostages. This week, we free-up 1.5 billion in Iranian assets, and five hostages are freed? I suppose if we give them the money to buy / make their own weapons, it's OK. And we must have stipulated that the paying of ransom is now an appropriate and just US policy. Unless, it was simple blackmail: Give us our money or we build nukes.

The real deal is we're looking down the barrel of a global recession. Oil is cheap because oil futures are cheap. Because, production of manufactured goods is going down. China is the catalyst. The opportunistic disease in the weak patient.
