Swap meet in San Fernando

Crossing the street , I enter what used to be a small airport. That was back when there were many such, but time and land costs... This one somehow had avoided development. It remains a large rectangle of underdeveloped tarmac; good for driving onto, and setting up tents, or portable anything, which for the last twenty years was the several-days-a week 'swap meet' that it had become since closing. I park at the edge with thoughts of getting broken into- I have tools inside- it will either happen, or it won't- and walk the hundred yards to an entrance. I pass a dollar to the ticket taker as she rapid-fire in Spanish continuous explaining something to another entrant, rips a cardboard ticket off the roll in half, rips the ticket in half- keeping both halves,
gives me two quarters, and waves me in.

Good. I don't want any special treatment. These are my peeps. No they're not not my peeps, but I'm comfortable around them. I make them uncomfortable: tall Caucasian in different garb, no hint of Hispanic about him.

It's true: I have no hint of Hispanic; except when I open my mouth.

Such is their culture, though... accepting and expecting that there are Hueros, and Chinos, and Japones', and even Negros: a multi-ethnic society dominated numerically by Ibero/Hispano/Meso-Americano
gene pools; but there are others, a variety. The language is the thing; the commonality, They all speak Spanish- 'Mexican' to be more precise (except maybe some puros-Indios from way out in the jungle, or up in the mountains) everyone speaks the Spanish, which is not a lengua-Franca, but their language- Spanish- for the last 500 years, or so, 'theirs'.

So I walk the aisles - looking like some sort or light-haired, light-skinned (if somewhat greying) long, lean, alien 'q-tip'; an oddity for sure.

But enough of that - who cares about that? - no, I was there to shop- hopefully find something...

I do not like shopping, except outdoor flea markets. Love those. When young, I used to sell in one. Loved haggling. I take my grandgirls to teach them how to barter. A lost art, except in some cultures. Pity. And, the thrill of discovering an affordable treasure. Who likes malls? Yuk.
