Silence. An old story I wrote... (Warning it is about September 11th).

I wrote this story for a university competition but did not have the guts to send it in at the time, I then waited and put it on my Facebook where friends and family liked it, so I thought I would put it up on here and you can all tell me what you think. :)

Please bear in mind that all of this piece is total fiction except the grave day it was based upon, I feel that I must reiterate that this story is a work of fiction!

Everyday of the year the noise was constant; no matter the time of day. Day light brought with it the sounds of conversation, babies wailing at their mothers, traffic constantly flowing like a never ending river. Night brought cabs beeping, Dogs howling, couples having arguments. No matter what there was always sound.

The air was still humid with the last of the summer trying to cling to the September day as autumn tried to push itself upon us. I can remember waking up that morning early. Sunlight spilling across the covers of my bed; golden in colour as though someone had spilled a jar of warm honey. Through the open window I could hear children playing on the streets laughing and shouting at one another. There were cars beeping as they went, travelling to their own destinations. Everything was normal; everything was as it should be.

I did not have much to do that day, some washing and shopping to be done but that could be done later I thought to myself as I dressed. Later I would wonder to myself if what I chose to wear that day had been suitable but at the time I did not realise what I was wearing. All I could think about was getting outside, getting into the sunshine, letting my skin soak it up. The day was glorious and stretched out before me like Christmas stretches out before a child. Excitement flared up inside me; a firework bursting into life, the sparks a tidal wave flowing through me. Looking out over the city was two gleaming towers of sunlight, gleaming off in the distance making them seem alive and angelic. I began to wander towards them drawn like a moth is drawn towards light; bemused and a
little confused.

Hailing a cab I travelled down town towards these two shinning towers feeling them pull me towards them. Being the tourist that I was, I knew nothing of the city. Not the sights or sounds and as the cab travelled further into the city the more I was entranced by everything. Children playing without a care in the world as their anxious mothers looked on fearfully. Teenagers meeting up in groups to enjoy the sunshine and the walk to school. Shops where opening up steadily like lily’s opening upon a pond, spilling out their wares upon the street.Businessmen and women where rushing to the subway to get to work on time. It was a hub of activity everything bustling away. It seemed I was not the only one caught up in my own private world of happiness and contentment.

Smiling to myself I paid the fare and got out onto the crowded streets wanting to walk amongst the bustling city life. It was everything I had ever dreamed it would be. I could smell fresh coffee; it enveloped me in a cloud of rich, dark temptation. The slight breeze was playful as cars travelled past, lifting my hair around my face and tickling my bare shoulders. The towers were taller now.Closer. They rose above the city as though watching over it all. I imagined them to be the cities watchmen watching and waiting to protect the inhabitants.Crazy I knew but they seemed so alive standing tall in the sunshine.

With an air of nonchalance I walked the remaining blocks towards those magnificent towers.
Thinking to myself nothing man made should look so perfect, so beautiful and strong. If the wind and rain had no effect upon these twins then surely they would stand forever watching and waiting over their city. As I drew close my dress skirt blew around my knees as through a sudden wind had sprung up but when I looked around nobody seemed to notice it, suddenly it was cold and I felt distant as from far away I heard a deafening noise.

The air seemed to rumble as through a thousand bees where flying overhead, looking up I saw the plane as it sailed like thunder through the sky and into one of the waiting watchmen. Glass rained down into the street from the tall building, not understanding what was happening I ran towards the two towers still standing watchmen but now one was injured black smoke spewing from its side into the air. Then came the second plane flying as straight and true as an arrow as it struck the second watchman.

As I watched in horror one of the watchmen. The strong, immovable tower began to sway, falling towards its brother, as through reaching out to give comfort to the injured and then gaining momentum it fell, plummeted down straight to the ground raining dust and debris in a blanket which covered everything it touched. Then the second tower joined the first and covered everything in silence. It is said that at times of great incident you only remember the large things, this I find to be untrue!

I remember the small things from that day; the sunlight, my clothes, the running, the dust. However the one thing I cannot remember is the noise it was as though the city had become silent. Silence reigned that day victorious and absolute while the towers crashed down!
