Reason to be Proud...

There are moments when we feel truly proud of our children - this is one of them.

Last November my daughter was watching the news on TV and the heartbreaking images of the plight of families fleeing Syria. Families with little more than the clothes on their back who risked life and limb to escape moved her beyond tears to take action.

My daughter, together with some close friends, took all their outgrown clothes to a distribution centre in Lyon to some Syrian refugees who had already arrived in France.

Over the next couple of months my daughter made regular trips to Lyon to collect more clothes as other expats in the surrounding area wanted to help and a FaceBook Group ActForRef - Lyon was created.

Her spare bedroom is now stacked with clothes waiting to be sorted and sent on to Greece.

This week, during my visit to France, we raised our glasses to toast the formation of an official charity/registered association so they can organise fund raising events. Up to this point my daughter and her friends had been funding the postage on parcels to Greece from their own pockets. Each parcel costing 58 euros for 30kg. Their priority is to send warm clothes (mainly children's) to those arriving straight off the boats and living in tents.

On Monday, I attended their first official fundraising event at the Wallace Pub in Lyon and as I watched herr work the room to promote the association and answer questions I felt a lump swell in my throat with pride.

This week during my stay I have once again been put to work sorting bags and boxes of clothes ready for shipment to Greece... no doubt I will be be sponsoring the next parcel. :)

What are you doing to help the Syrian refugees?

It is only my opinion, but I think the intensity of the situation in Syria requires far more than cloth-drives. While not entirely meaningless, it is the proverbial fig leaf.

Agree, Kamino. However, while the politicians debate the appropriate course of action non-political groups are interested in the humanitarian crisis... What is the solution? No one knows...
