I can't believe it!

I just got a call from Covenant Books. I sent them a 16,000 word short story thinking that, if they liked it, I could write two more and make a book out of it. They want to publish it as a book! They're sending me the contract info next week. I am stunned. I wrote the story, about a man whose wife loses her struggle with cancer which sends him into a deep depression. The story is about how he deals with his loss and rises out of the ashes of his pain to become part of the world again.

They actually said they would be "proud" to publish it. I'm over the moon excited. I can't believe this happened so fast and without a single rejection. I contacted them two weeks ago. I wasn't even expecting to hear anything from them for a few months. I am going to be a published author!

Now I'm not so sure. They sent me the contract, and it turns out they're a self-publishing outfit. I thought they were a traditional book publisher. They'll publish my book - for $3345. So it's no loss for them if it doesn't sell. :-(

Don't sign, P. They're what we call here a vanity publisher. A publisher should pay you, not the other way around. Take your letter into a bookshop ASAP. The staff will explain it. You saw them in an advert, am I right?

Agree with Sebald. Don't sign. You might as well pay for an editor and then self-publish the book yourself. Also, we have a Beta readers forum where you can request Beta Readers to check out the book for plot holes etc. etc

Ah they want a not insubstantial amount of cash. Yes, it should be the other way round. Unless you have extreme pots of dosh and an overweening desire to be published right now and at any cost, avoid like the plague. Sorry.

lifes a gamble man pay up and see how it goes..after all vanity is a big earner...good luck
