Happy Birthday

Have you ever noticed how, as the years pass on, your birthday just becomes another day? There's nothing exciting or special about it (generally starting sometime around the age of sixteen I feel) and you start to become more conscious of the fact that life is passing and really, while it is pretty cool that you're alive, there's not much more to celebrate.

Today, over 150 people were exposed to an explosion that killed more than 30 and left hundreds injured. Not a month before this, hundreds more died or were injured in Turkey in similar attacks, similarly in Africa and France. It's hard to find cause to celebrate in a world that idolizes violence, even as it condemns displays such as these. I don't understand it, and in many ways I don't want to because I prefer to believe that people are intimately and basically good. This is a fallacy (wishful thinking to be exact) and it directly speaks against my infatuation with philosophy and makes me incredibly uncomfortable and thus I know at some point, I will have to explore that ignorance and maybe find some answers that are awful.

So on this day, which also so happens to be my birthday if that wasn't moderately obvious from the title, I don't want any presents, I don't want any wishes for a good day or anything like that. All I ask is that we all analyze ourselves and acknowledge the violence around us, to condemn this wholeheartedly in preference of love. In Brussels, Turkey, Nigeria, Paris: Everywhere. And while I know it might be an impossible task to expunge all violence and hate, to usher in a reign of peace and coexistence, I just ask that all of us, every one of you and myself included, at least be conscious of the pain and suffering already present in the world, and for all of us to try and replace the small acts of violence we transgress onto others every day with love. Take that anger you feel at a driver for cutting you off, and think instead of the life that person is living and do not exact revenge or violence on that person. See Racism and know that it is something that exists but that it is not something which must be accepted, for we are all humans regardless of our color of ethnicity.

Love will always triumph over hate, and love is not always a grand gesture. If you only do a single act of love in a day, know that you have still brightened two people's days, and that the next time you show love it will be greater, because the second person you bettered was yourself.

First off, happy birthday! :D

Exactly how I feel, well said. Whether or not people are naturally good, whether or not peace is wishful thinking, what matters is you are making a positive difference in the world, on your own life, and in somebody else.

I believe in karma; right now I'm going through a situation that is very similar to one that I put somebody else through. Not to say your goal in doing good should be selfish, but rather I believe doing one good deed can inspire that person to do the same, and then it spreads like fire. "Spread hope like fire, spread love like violence," as Tom DeLonge sings.

One of my favorite quotes is said by Gandalf: "Some believe it is only great power that can hold evil in check. But that is not what I have found. I have found that it is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love."

And if you think about it, the darkness is what is natural, because light takes energy while darkness is what always exists if there is nothing to create light. But so long as the human race exists, that flame will keep on flickering.

Live and let live, and when goodness come, welcome it with open arms and love ever brimming. When hate enters, do not close yourself from it, for hate has a way of wearing a person down. Instead, accept it and understand it, but know that it cannot affect your love nor your happiness.

Gandalf is one of my favorite characters in fantasy and possibly fiction just because of all the incredible things Tolkien said through him, really an astounding character who I connect with on a deeply personal level, I like the fact that you quoted one of my favorite quotes from the old guy, small world I suppose, huh?
