First of all, they turned it into a religious thing (sure I mentioned Easter, but just because it's the most recent holiday a lot of people celebrate and know about) when I'm actually agnostic and hate having "God" sneak its way into messages. They did this by giving it a horrendously long and misleading title that just made me barf a little in my mouth. Then, as I go through the article (it started out alright at least, my introduction was untouched) I started spotting tiny little changes where the editor had gone in with a scalpel and just fucked with my work. Just fucked with it. I never got an email saying "hey can we literally just make you look incompetent as a writer at certain points" or anything.
There were contractions in places I left the words separate for emphasis, words repeated so closely together it seemed as though I had lit my thesaurus on fire while writing, complete lack of parallelism at a certain point where I had it and they decided, 'nah fuck grammar,' and at points, my voice was ripped out of the piece and replaced momentarily with someone else.
Needless to say, I am not happy. Yet in all of this, I see what it is like to get published (this was the first time I ever have been published since before I was too fearful of rejection and humiliation) and I see that not everyone is willing to work with the author to get the best possible outcome. My friends have read through the article, and they love it. It just hurts me though, knowing that it's not my perfect work, it's not my vision entirely.
I must sound pretty selfish at this point, so I'll end the rant here, but I just want to say this: I get that edits and changes are necessary, just keep in mind to run them by the person who made the original.
