They stand in a dry grass field with gasoline and matches. By the grace of God, they haven't burned the whole thing down. Yet.
Sometimes it's a bit overwhelming, so it's easy to dismiss. One day, though, when the whole field goes up, it will be too late.
I grew-up during The Cold War, when the threat of Global Thermonuclear War hung heavy over all our heads. Now, it hangs somewhat less threatening. Replaced in part by the fear of terrorists with "WMDs" that only cause localized death and destruction. How nice.
And, of course, the "rouge states" that don't fear MAD (mutually assured destruction). They really don't give a... darn. But they don't need WMDs. They can use cyber warfare to crash the very backbone of 21st Century civilization. Lower the playing field to their level.
And the truth is, there's not enough skilled people that could rebuild our society. They know it. Not without The Internet, Electricity and Transportation. Take that away and we're walking behind oxen again. Knowledge of C++ doesn't feed one mouth.
I'm not going to list all the places, but you know where they are throwing matches. There's not enough adults around, and not enough fire extinguishers. The wind will blow.
I actually miss the days of Jimmy Carter and Leonid Brezhnev.
