  1. From Manuscript to Published Work: A Mindful Progress Report - week 2

    Hello Friends!

How is the rewrite going? Well, since you askedÖ Itís not. Itís horrible! Not how I had planned the week at all! Without boring you with the details, letís just say I became very busy after my last blog post and that, folks, is that. In the evenings, too? Yes, in the evenings, too. (Sigh.) Not to mention one very exciting trip to a very interesting junk store that sparked more of an interest in writing horror than fantasy. It was literally falling down; I could ...
  2. wild things

    ...

I grew up in the city where wild animals only came during the wild fires in the surrounding hillsides. The creeks and all the water that flows from down those hills goes into concrete channels built to get rid of that water into the sea as fast as possible.

There used to be floods. Flood planes are nice and flat for building.

Anyway... I'm on the edge of those hills and no longer nature-deprived except for cockroaches, worms, earwigs; or small birds and ...

  3. The Mysterious Teenage Hominid

    Writing For Teens:

There was no question why I wrote YA fiction in the first place. When I got into it, it was a thrilling, lucrative and expressive category. Harry Potter was dominating the charts. The Hunger Games appeared, along with Divergent and Twilight. Writing young adult fiction then was like being on s speeding freight train which had no breaks and a throttle that only went forward.

There are no estimates of how many writers jumped on that band wagon. ...
  4. From Manuscript to Published Work: A Mindful Progress Report Journal - week 1, post 1

    Hello Friends!

Iíve heard that one great way of staying on track and accomplishing your goals is to share them with other like-minded folks who can help keep you accountable to what youíve planned. Not that I expect or am looking for that degree of commitment from any readers here (in fact, it would be overwhelming), just the idea of reporting my progress seemed beneficial enough. Who knowsómaybe it will help some other writers accomplish their goals?

  5. Another Finger on The Scale

I don't know how many of you saw this little turd deposited in our societal punchbowl:

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/comp...wix?li=BBnb7Kz

No, this wasn't posted on The Onion. It was in The Wall Street Journal.
This stuff is both asinine, and scary at the same time. It seems each day that we are inching closer to being finished as a functional, sane society.

  6. What if... ?

I wasn't sure if I should post this in a prompt, conversation or game area... It could be either or, so I decided to post is in my blog. It would make an interesting game.

Some ideas can be had by completing this question. I had one come to mind and was wondering how others completed this sentence?

What if a woman gave a sample for a DNA registry.... and the results came back as inconclusive?

  7. 3 wheeled bike

Walking to the gym I cross a bridge and as I go over I can view a over a block of flats..(apartments) and garages...the other day a young lad was riding around the car park while a few adults watched from the open garage door..all smiling at him an I thought he is going to get the piss taken out of him if he peddles around on a trike...today I noticed coming back an estate agents for sale in the main room and then I realised they were there to see what was on offer and the thought crossed my mind ...

  8. fine photos messed up...

    ....

Today on my Facebook someone posted fine pictures of Ararat.

But then l looked closer and it was something there, man-made.

What is this- I said to myself?

No, it was not the Ark ( as I'm sure all of you were thinking) it was garbage in a ditch grown over with wildflowers.

  9. Fan-Fiction Without Knowing It?

Iíve known for a long time what fan-fic is and what itís not. I know what channeling is too. And we know what plagiarism is all about. Fan-fiction is an honored tradition of carrying on a single book, series or saga with well-known and loved characters in a similar setting to the original. 50 Shades of Grey actually started out as Twilight fan-fiction, and then developed a life of its own. Channeling happens when youíve written something very similar to a book or story that has already been ...
  10. The good stuff in life hurts

Five months ago to the day, I was hit by a falling tree. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time, or Mother Nature was aiming for me. The top of a dead maple tree snapped off in the wind. I never saw it, never heard it. I woke up in pain, laying on the ground, struggling to breath and coughing up blood, never a good sign. I struggled to move my left side. Digging my phone out of my pocket I called a friend of mine who knew the land behind my house. I told him where I was and told him I was hurt ...

  11. Life eh?

    Y'know?
I was thinking about Winston's sig earlier.
Oh dear, I thought it had said something about getting creative, I mis-read it.
My first thought had been " yeah right, me? Creative? if only."

I've always wanted to write in a journalistic kind of way. Not totally facts and figures etc., putting a little bit of me in there, in a creative diarist way? Is there such a thing?
The reason for this foray into introspection is something that happened when ...

  12. A Better Place, Revisited

I've always seen that phrase masquerading as a refuge for the shallow minded and dismissive. When someone in your life dies, the impulse for most people is to tell you that your loved one is "...in a better place" now. This paper-thin logic assumes two unproveable points: Where we are now sucks, and where we go from here is somehow better.

Second point first. The frail human condition predisposes us toward a belief in Nirvana, Valhalla, or some other higher realm. ...

  13. Operation: Hoarder's Bane

Mother nature herself has deemed my city unworthy of springs' warm embrace, and thus I steel myself for what must be done. I prepare for war. I must be ruthless and give no quarter, for none will be offered in kind. I may lose my life in the process, but I will stop at nothing to put to my hated foe to rout!

The operation composes of two objectives: Locate and secure all valuable assets and then purge the unworthy.

So, in other words, it's time for spring cleaning. I've ...
  14. Quit Your Wine-ing!

The fabled spring time has come at last. The sun no longer vanishes at 6pm, water has been discovered in it's liquid form, and there is an odd green species of flora forming on my lawn. The end of winter is neigh! Or so I thought, I swapped my tires over to All Season for Spring/Summer and we had a blizzard. I'm starting to think I'll have to pull a Canadian version of Breaking Bad just to afford enough to move somewhere warm

Speaking of meth brewing, I decided to rekindle my ...
  15. Portal v.s. Urban Fantasy--It's WAR!

There really is no conflict between these two sub-genres. There is a difference, even if we're splitting hairs. Charles De Lint first described urban fantasy with his story Dreams Underfoot in the early 90s, making it a relatively new genre, in retrospect to the times. In short, urban fantasy brings the fantastical into the mundane world or into the contemporary setting. It's another dimension, another time and place, a different universe with it's own rules. The magical invades our world, ...
  16. The delusion of first published "stardom"

So on social media, I have a lot of "aspiring writers" of novice writers I associate with. I've been doing this crap for a few years,
so it kind of builds up like plaque on your teeth. But I've always noticed that most of these people? When they first get published
somewhere? They become real like....unrealistic about it. And I'm not trying to be mean. Because I was very proud when a paying
magazine accepted my first short story. And it IS something to be proud of. ...

  17. Time Crunch

It's coming up fast. There are about only 5 weeks left until my move. It's hard to believe it's almost here.

This Friday I get my storage unit. This Saturday is my farewell luncheon at the local Golden Corral.
Next week, my stuff goes into said storage unit. It's unreal. For the last few months I kept thinking time was going so slow. And now, it's like where'd the time go?

  18. Communication Itself is Catharsis

I didn't realize it at first, but I am who I am- a person that can be quite to the point of unnatural at times.

Because of this I'm well aware of the anxiety and comfort people have when being in the same space with a person that does not communicate. It's strange to the point where you realize that having a quiet person in the same room with you is worse than being alone in the same room.

The last one made me wonder a bit, and the only thing I could come up with is that ...

  19. Failure to Understand

I will never understand why, no matter what good a person does- some people can only focus on the bad, that one mistake the person makes.

I'm getting ridiculed on another forum because of ONE single typo that I made. This one member ( who seems to think of herself as the guardian of the gate) continuities to post in the thread repeating my mistake.

  20. Grog

I've received two lessons in this topic in the last month: Once from a historical re-enactor at Mount Vernon, then again last night at the Navy Ball.
It must mean that I was meant to share my new-found knowledge(?)

I'm sure most folks have heard of the word "grog", and know it has some nautical meaning. In fact, grog was a vital part of The Age of Sail and naval history. The water stowed aboard ship got slimy and foul tasting after a few months at sea. It was ...

  21. Grammar Nazis!

I've probably spent most my life resenting any and all grammar Nazis. I've always believed that the message delivered via writing was more important than the mechanics that drive them. A large part of this is due to English being my adopted language (My Hungarian is terrible). The frustrations were routed early in my English Second Language classes. When I was 6, I had to learn the language from scratch, and I never really grasped many of the basic components of good grammar. Basically, I put most ...

Todd Gardling walked up the hill from Sunset winding past mansions, well out of his element,
no jacket or proper coat or other good vestment
while occasional Jaguars and other foreign cars of a certain type's occupants looked on with unsettled indignation. No, or better Go ( go back)they might say if sure they could speed away behind rolled up windows.

  23. The Cruelty of Time

Ever notice how time seems to go faster as you get older? When I was a kid, summer break felt like it lasted forever. Now, the seasons just fly by. It feels like January seems to keep edging closer to itself as the years roll on. A friend of mine pointed out an interesting observation. The longer we are alive, the smaller a portion of time is represented within the whole. For instance, two months for someone who is 10 years old is 1.67% of their total life (2 months / 120 months). Using the same ...

  24. The Capitol, Continued

After the parade, my daughter and I decided to look for a bite. We saw some food trucks the day before, and began searching the streets around The National Mall. We figured out later that because of the Cherry Blossom Festival the city had erected a bunch of no-parking zones and kicked them out. We settled for some mediocre chain sandwich and salad shop up by the White House.
My girl wanted to check-out the Renwick Gallery, which was next to the White House. First, we stopped by the WH ...

  25. The Capitol

It always makes me feel like I'm a Tribute from some outlying District when I arrive. The flagrant opulence and power. You never see President Snow, though...
It was my second trip to Washington D.C. The first was four years ago, so see my daughter perform in the annual Cherry Blossom Festival. This time, it was to see my son perform in the same band.
