  4. “Remember Me” Star Trek TNG Season 4

I don’t know why the episode always stuck with me, but it has.

The idea of the entire universe, shrinking around you? Every moment there are less things, less people. Until, the point where existence simply collapses upon you. There is nothing, and soon you are nothing.

I’ll admit, I’ve always had a soft-spot for strong female characters (part of the reason I was such a Voyager fan). In this episode, Dr. Bev Crusher freaks-out a little, but does not panic. Instead, ...

  7. KILL IT WITH FIRE take 5

This is the last thing we recorded 3 weeks ago. Due to a bunch of retarded bullshit, I haven't been able to play my guitar for 3 weeks, but saturday and sunday we worked on a new song and we're about 1:35 seconds in.

It's whatever; progress has been made, albeit very slowly.

I haven't posted this because I've been depressed.

  8. Year of Hell

This rant refers to a spectacular Star Trek Voyager episode (1997), and an exploration of that episode. For current events, see “2020 Year of Hell”

I am a social pariah. I am a “Trekkie” (someone who likes Star Trek lore). Also, I am a fan of the Star Trek series “Voyager”, which is maligned by most Trekkies. This makes me an outcast amongst outcasts.

That said, I will not back down from my praise of the Voyager episode “Year of Hell” (even most Voyager haters admit ...

  9. witching hour thoughts

by , August 17th, 2020 at 08:26 AM (Stillborn Thoughts)
This weekend has been a respite of the mind and soul. While much of it was spent simply doing adult work – laundry, cleaning the house, taking my cat outside and playing with her – they were all generously slow and simple. There was nothing particularly complex about anything I did, and that’s what was spectacular.
This is something I’m sure the older among you will recognize. The joy of a simple day seems an understated one, but something I can’t imagine living long without.

  10. Blind Positivity

The weight of the world can be oppressive and dark, particularly when we're buried under a sea of existential angst to begin with. It can be useful to 'flip the script' as they say, and try on a shifted perspective. What has been working for me lately is to pay more attention to the good things happening in each moment. For instance, I am breathing, and nothing really hurts. The air is clean enough and I have a glass of water right here to drink. Today, while not guaranteed, is unfolding nicely. ...

by , August 15th, 2020 at 02:32 AM (Stillborn Thoughts)
it feels, lately, as if the worries of the world are too real to bear. not to say I’m incapable. I’m anything but that, and honestly that fact makes it worse. knowing I can fix my problems but haven’t only shines the spotlight internally.
that’s why I’m writing another of these after so long – they’re a good receptacle to leave yesterday’s remains in. perhaps not the prettiest of send off’s, but it’s what works.

Lately, work has become a greater and greater focus for me. First ...

  15. A month of no writing (fiction)

Time moves quickly, it seems, in the COVID days. Things that seemed to happen days ago sometimes turn out to be weeks ago.

For the last month I've been busy with business, which involves writing web applications and other software, and that's a good thing. I need something to support the writing habit.

I've also been reading Roger Zelazny's Amber series, and since that's ten books, it takes a while. At least individually, they aren't long books.

  17. Poets & Epiphany

    Epiphany

This is the word most misused by poets. It means “something invisible that emerges from something visible.” Poets forget it’s religious and requires divine intervention. To them, it’s “any eureka moment that offers a warm personal gesture of appreciation to a poet from herself.” I’m against solipsism, as it leads to uncertain outcomes.
The classic case is “pnevma.” Ancient Greeks reasoned that pnevma, “breath,” was life’s essence, since it went obviously ...

  19. My high point as a writer

In the last blog, I reported that a member of the board of directors of the original author's foundation asked, when I offered, for an epub of my manuscript.

This was a big step, and a nervous one. I had the audacity to try to follow a renowned author in his field, and to write a sequel which would meet his standards. It's rife with the opportunity for spectacular failure, and I understood that going in. But I thought I had what it takes, so I wrote the book.

    Last night ...

  21. The Next Step

I just moved on in "the next step" for the sequel I can probably never publish ... but that doesn't mean I'm not going to explore it.

I contacted someone who might carry some weight with the agency in charge of the author's estate. At least if he likes the book and would give me a letter of introduction and recommendation, it could help. He's interested in reading the novel, and agreed he always thought the original needed a sequel.

This morning my wife and I ...

  22. The ending that wasn't the ending -- or was it?

Yesterday I noted I thought I might rework the ending of my work just completed, and so I took on that task.

I had two villians with close ties, and they both died in the last chapter. Both deaths were "off camera", and both were unexplained, though with inference as to what caused them. I questioned the similarity.

My first thought tempted me to change the second death, or possibly let the man live on to cause trouble in a potential sequel. When I pulled up the ...

  24. Research

I spent much of the day wasting my time to discover that I have very low regard for Pro Writing Aid, as detailed in a post in Writing Discussion.

I loaded both the novel I wrote a sequel to, and my novel, fully analyzed both, and compared the results. The original is better than mine, and I scored better on style, grammar, and other metrics measured by the software. That's not a good recommendation for the software.

I spent the rest of the day in another review of my manuscript, ...
