  1. When Friends Fight (language)

This relentless bashing of The President over Turkey and The Kurds is asinine and needs to stop. Sometimes, allies have disagreements. There’s always the option of going Wilsonian multinationalist, and trying to “solve” the issue. Not only does that rarely work, but it often creates more problems. The nation-building after WWI helped set-up the conditions that set WWII ablaze. And Africa is still paying for that hubris.

News flash: President Trump is a nationalist. I know ...

I saw a guy in a wheel chair get run over. He didn't actually get run over, but he got hit. It was a busy intersection and I was stopped, and I noticed him because he kept going into the crosswalk and staying there after the light changed, into the street, then back out on the corner. He might've been drunk or high, or crazy.

I looked away and then when I looked back I saw something large spinning in the air like four or five feet off the ground while ...

  3. Books that I've read...

More than once now, I've sat reading a book at home and, after having read a few chapters, suddenly found myself thinking, I know what happens next, I've read this one before. I've read so many now, it seems, I can't REMEMBER every book that I've read, that I've decided that I'm going to start, well, I HAVE, started, at A,B,C, in the fiction section, and I'm going to slowly work my way through them alphabetically.
Last weekend, I brought two from the same author home, on the assumption that ...

  4. Deconstructing, Man (language, drugs)

A guilty pleasure of mine is the 1993 movie “Demolition Man”. Good lord, what campy fun. Sandra Bullock was SO hot. And, for those of you so inclined, Stallone was in good shape. Actually, both actors have aged well. I don’t know what happened to Wesley Snipes. I think he fled the country on tax evasion.

As an aficionado of the dark art of dystopian storytelling, this movie resonated with me. The script writers borrowed liberally from Aldous Huxley’s masterpiece “Brave New ...

  5. Young Adult--Naughty or Nice

Young adult books are generally aimed at readers in the 12 to 18 year-old age bracket. However, it can vary sometimes by a few years either way. There is also a sub-classification of “upper” and “lower” YA. Lower might be 12 to 17 years-old, whereas upper could be around 14 to 19 years-old. Young adult books are not really age oriented as much as they are content categorized. I lean toward the upper young adult level of 14 to 19 years-old. There are no fast and hard rules about this. It’s a generalization ...

The police called me. I didn't know how they got my number. They said they needed to get a statement from me. I was in such a panic I didn't ask what for. All I could do was say 'fuck- fuck-fuck...' I assumed that I was going down.

They asked to come over and I said no, I'd go there.

  7. The Minimalist

I don't remember when my wife started calling me that. As long as I can remember, my default mode was doing the most with the least. Before it became fashionable, I just aimed for low impact.

The Marines was a real eye-opener for me. Never before had I been exposed to such a large number of loud, strutting peacocks. I understood it was part of the game, and I played my part. Hey, I can pull up my "command voice" and put the fear of God into a person, even today. But ...

  8. one last bee in an ageing bonnet...dithering...

It never ceases to amaze me how I spend so much time pondering the so very mundane which, ultimately, only serves to exacerbate, a wish/desire/call it what you might, to do one certain thing thing that I would love to do before I leave this earth. I just noticed that I said "to do" and not "to have done" so maybe even now, I harbour some small hope but it really is just wishful thinking.

Today, this morning, was just another Sunday no different to any other. I slept ...

  9. FINALLY GETTING SOMEWHERE - HURRICANE HELL

So, I seem to be getting somewhere with my hurricane poems. I have been writing drafts and trying to hit the topic from different angles, cutting (let me try some of the cute little icons here) drilling away at the words immersing myself in the subject..... Think I have made some headway. Along this sojourn I have had a few sideline poems pop up in surprise always a welcome!

So, in between my continuing reading of the adventures of Kate ...

We had some new members- some new people that showed up. They definitely brought some energy.

    'E' thought they were brilliant.

They spoke about the country's long standing policies, and again how 'outcome' is the ultimate proof of a thing.

Outcome is everything. It proves the premise, which is no longer a premise, but is the truth.

Changing an outcome is what matters. How many tries or mistakes ...

  11. _The Catcher in the Rye_ by J.D. Salinger Review

    ******
Note: This review was originally written back in 2016 as part of a personal "1001+ Book Challenge." I follow a Peter Boxall's 1001 Books: You Must Read Before You Die list and write about books I found particularly noteworthy. This post was edited recently to improve grammar and overall readability, but still reflects the views of a 23-year old me. My writing has improved since then, I promise!

  12. How to Write Lyrically

Now I know I'm not good at writing concisely and clearly, and my writing can be a bit wordy and pretentious at times, but I know something about prose rhythm, and that is what I am going to teach you today.

Let us examine this passage which I wrote. Whether you think it is wordy, pretentious, archaic, or peculiar, I think it has prose rhythm, and I'm going to explain how to achieve that in this post.

  13. Celebrity Endorsements

Celebrity endorsements, also called blurbs, are those little quotes that appear on your book’s cover, or in the front matter of the pages. Example: “This was a riveting ride from start to finish”–Stephen King. You might get one or several.

Celebrity blurbs can be a real minefield for the new-up-and-coming author who is about to release his/her prized tome. Even some great mid-listers can get caught up in this hunt for star approval. BTW, soliciting for a blurb should take

(Just saw what they were up to on Capitol Hill today. 535 intellectual midgets)

Gotta call it what it is, sorry.

I’ve railed against this inane, futile tendency to embrace the “Do Something!” delusion. Here is the case in point. I’m reading news releases highlighting the US Congress’ efforts to curtail gun ownership in an effort to limit “gun violence” (i.e. people committing violent crime with certain weapons). The current focus is to make it more difficult for ...

    #13 - (a Friday) thoughts outloud

It was a blizzard day. I got up early and made several deliveries, then worked a 6. I don't feel sick or anything, but I feel like this day ran me, not that I ran my day.

The only thing I look forward to is the meetings, and the time I feel inspired to think on things related to what's coming.

In case you haven’t read it, there is a part one article on this subject. I just needed to touch it up a bit and add some more basic information, including this time, what an author might try to avoid, or experience an author/reviewer confrontation.

I had a vision. Not like an actual vision, like I 'saw it' or something, but more like I understood a 'bigger picture', the bigger picture.

We keep talking about the fairness and the justice were working towards; the equality- but I think I saw the equity ( I'll have to go over this- edit, thesaurus, define), or lack of equity as it is, right now.

What I mean is that I saw the actual level of people, mankind, all of them, ...

  20. A Dead Wire

I know some of you have strong opinions regarding the place of electric bikes in the future of motorcycling (*cough Plasticweld cough*). But they are here. And in my opinion, here to stay.
Granted, these initial models leave a lot to be desired, particularly in the range department. The best models only get about 100 to 150 combined city / highway miles between charges. But that deficiency isn't a problem for folks looking for a hassle-free commuter. I used to ride 40 miles a day, and ...

  21. WORKING ON HURRICANE POEMS

So, I'm working on my hurricane poems. Yes, I know it doesn't look like I am, but I am. grrr Really hard to take the steps back (or should I say steps forward) and get INTO the scene, not be the observer. For me, it has always been easier that way. Perhaps I'm more a writer than I thought. So this is what came out of my frustration.

I got in a fight. Actually, I got beat up. It was three on one.

I was on the phone with a friend. Some guys overheard what I was talking about. They flat out asked what I was up to.

I was putting out a some papers at this coffee shop. We'd had them printed.
"This is you?" one guy said. I forgot I'd been there before like a week before.

  23. The Science of Motorcycle Maintenance

Screw Rob Pirsig and his stupid book. There is no "art" to working on a motorcycle. And Zen on your own time.

There was no art to the way my bike leaned on it's side stand. It was balanced improperly, and on uneven ground it never sat stable. I could have meditated on the steady-state of the Universe, and come to the acceptance of my crappy kick-stand. Nope. Apologies to my Hawaiian relatives: I'm makin' it mo betta.

  24. A Hospital appointment...

Yesterday was the day of a Hospital appointment. I'd managed to keep that from my wife but would I be able to have a day out without her wondering, or commenting on such an event. She would never ask outright where I'd been or why I'd been out so long, being as that I was on a week off work and therefore rarely surfaced before lunchtime, I knew that but if I hadn't said something, before hand, it would have been hanging there, the elephant in the room, long story, and so, a few days prior to my ...
