  1. Biotics: pro or anti?

If you do a search for Clostridium difficile, youíll find illustrations of miserable looking people sitting on toilets. One shows a guy with steam coming out of his head, which may be to indicate a fever. Or maybe he banged his head while running to the bathroom.

Thatís what I was diagnosed with. For those in a hurry, itís called C Diff. Like for if you have to go and somebody asks you what the hell is wrong with you, instead of telling him Clostridium difficile (which is actually fun ...

  2. December Seventh

Some of you may know, my mom was there in Honolulu on December 7, 1941. She was twelve when she saw the world around her literally explode.

My mom struggled with mental health issues her entire life. How much was organic, and how much environmental? "Crazy" does run in the family. My uncle (her brother) committed suicide about a decade after the attack. Quite a few members of my family are on meds.

I love history and politics, but there is so much ...

  3. Suffering from alcohol deficiency

Iím becoming a grumpy old man. I no longer care what people think about me nor am I going to go out of my way to appease people. The fact is, I donít care for most people. The people I dislike the least are the ones that leave me the hell alone. I donít think thatís too much to ask. Unless youíre interesting or a close personal friend or relative, or somebody from this forum (I like a lot of the people here), just leave me the hell alone. I have no desire to discuss the weather or anything else ...

  4. Inundated with rejections this past week.

I've received several rejections this week on a few different stories. They were all form rejections, too, so no indication of what wasn't working. I must say I am impressed with the response times. Some only took a month, others about two weeks. That means you can send them out again a lot quicker.

  8. Having an Opinion

That's become somewhat of a thinly veiled insult, calling someone "opinionated". It seems to set down the marker that the person with the opinion has closed their mind to new ideas, and is hostile to criticism.

    Here's my take:

Having an opinion means that you have the acumen to reason, and the maturity to stand by your reasoned thoughts. It doesn't mean that you want to argue, and are spoiling for a fight all the time. It simply means that you believe ...

  9. When I was a kid...

When I was a kid, sure we had differences of opinion about politics and other things, but we shared a common reality. These days, there seems to be two realities: one based on objective facts and the other based on how those who believe it want the world to be. Their leaders actually call it, on national TV, "alternative facts."

When we can't even agree on facts, there's no way in hell that we're going to have civil dialog. Everything just devolves into yelling and screaming ...

  13. Irwin's Top Albums of All Time (cont...)

There doesn't appear to be a way to edit posted blog entries, so this is a new one that continues from the old one which was about my pics for the top albums of all time! Whoo-hooo!

The list is getting a little unwieldy, and it probably should be broken up--either according to decade, or maybe genre. Something. I'll look at it after the list is complete.

    So, here's some more...

  14. Dialogue

"I've never seen that man before," the woman said. "I have no idea who he is."
The lawyer squinted his eyes and drew his head back. He looked to the side at her. "He's your father," he said, exasperated.

  15. New Blog

I haven't done much work on my novel. It's only about 25k words at this point, although fully outlined. I'm not sure what the problem is, but maybe if I write in a blog, I'll be more motivated to work on my novel.

So... what to blog about... Music? I don't like any contemporary music. It's all crap... uncreative crap. And a lot of it is just ripped off from classic rock.

Hell, I don't even listen to music any more, other than watching concert videos of classic rock bands. ...

Todayís dish Iíll be preparing is Rice with Spam. This is a very basic meal, but versatile and adaptable. The staple ingredients provide essential survival nutrients that are easy to prepare and eat. Especially for those on-the-go times when youíre chasing down looters, or running from biker gangs.

  18. Life, MY life, and giggles in the darkness.

People... Life... MY life...and giggles in the darkness:

As with most working people who are in regular employment, my daily routine is pretty much set in stone, from when I wake up in the afternoon to when I get home and go to bed in the morning. There is a bus journey to and from work and there is a fair amount of walking involved. There are, of course, many others, living out their own little, ritualistic almost, regular day to day existences, and life goes on. There are people that ...

  20. _Slapstick, or, Lonesome No More! _ by Kurt Vonnegut Review

    ******
Note: This review was originally written back in 2016 as part of a personal "1001+ Book Challenge." I follow a Peter Boxall's 1001 Books: You Must Read Before You Die list and write about books I found particularly noteworthy. This post was edited recently to improve grammar and overall readability, but still reflects the views of a 23-year old me. My writing has improved since then, I promise!

  21. Poems and Poetry

So I've been writing, reading, critiquing and doing re-writes of poetry, attending writing groups, participating in open mic's, talking to other poets about their poetry and writing assignments, dreaming about poetry, reading books about how to write poetry, reading books about how to write, eating poetry (oops, got carried away there with poetry). Yup, once you start eating the poetry perhaps you're taking things a bit too far and it's time for a breather. Watch some Netflix. Seriously, I haven't ...
  22. Me and my damned bladder, whatever...

    One of these days.

It's Sunday morning, or at least it was, twenty seven minutes ago, and, as always, first on my "to do" list is the long walk out of town for my cheap-store shopping . As is the way of things at this time of the week, I usually arose from my slumbers at about nine, roused by a steaming hangover, it's not as though I get drunk even, maybe my having worked a Friday night shift and not going to bed until Saturday night has something to do with it but anyway,Okay, ...

I'm better now. The video history 'E' showed me caused a crisis of conscience, but I'm over it. I've made a recommitment.

I'm sure 'E' was testing me. I almost failed. I felt bad for all those individuals that were killed during that time but I don't anymore. Feeling bad isn't necessary and in fact it is counterproductive. We must stay focused on the long term goal. The Kronstadt Rebellion was a counterrevolutionary action. The local Red Army members, thought ...

  24. Writing well is torturous sometimes

In a new article by Sarah Labrie, the author talks about a subject many writers shy away from discussing: how excruciatingly difficult it is. The article resonated with me in that I am often guilty of staring for hours at a blinking cursor before ending each session by slamming my fist on the keyboard, having not penned a single coherent sentence.

It's not writer's block she's talking about. The act of writing itself is as utilitarian as it gets: string a few words together into a sentence ...

  25. Junk

I tried to write today, but produced dreck.

It's been five years since I've made a serious effort at writing. I should expect to be a little rusty, but this is the pitts. It's like language decided to leak out of my brain as if it were a font and I'm leftover with the most elementary of words. I was diagnosed with PTSD recently, so I've had a lot on my mind, I'll admit that. But I returned to writing to heal and thus far it's more frustrating than it's worth. I remember when words ...
