  1. Dry Your Eyes, Mate

The tears that have been spilled on my counter are countless.
I wrote that in a story once.

If I sit here and think, for a moment, about all the customers I have seen cry, there's a great big messy montage of me handing tissues out. To Maggie, to Moiretta, to Mrs. Burke. To Lee, to Linda, to the woman with the black eye in her customer photo.
To so many more than that.

To the woman whose son was covered in cigarette burns thanks to the teenagers at the ...

    Make the Connection Mr. Obvious

Have you talked to her lately?
    You know,
that lady who birthed your children?
The one who sits beside you
    when you're driving around town
    paying bills, and banking.

    You probably thought
it was just the speaker rattling
    in your car-
    that annoying, scratchy sound,
the one you just tune out
    and think,
“I'll have to fix that someday.” ...

  3. Strangers Hate Me

Hate me once, shame on you. Hate me twice, probably just a coincidence.
Hate me three times?.. What the hell am I doing wrong?

There must be something about my conduct, or my face, or my essence - that some people just can't stand.
The other night I was pulling into the supermarket parking lot, it was after 6pm and it was dark.
A man was lurking in between cars, playing the invisible pedestrian game.
As I pulled into the lot, I stopped to let him walk ...

  4. Pine Tree Lucidity

For my dad, who just turned 83. Happy Birthday Dad!

    Pine Tree Lucidity

Dad says his favorite dream place
is beneath his old pine tree.
While leaning back against the bark,
    he hears wind symphonies.

I watch him from the window-
his eyes closed, his face serene.
    His life-worn shoulders rounded,
rough hands resting near his knees.

There's a secret in his stillness,
    a something, I can't see; ...

  5. Alton Brown's ribs

Ok, born out of a slightly creepy discusson in the Dinner thread, I'm going to write about a guy who kidnaps Alton Brown and cooks his ribs. While Alton is forced to watch, and even eat his own ribs. I bet he regrets making that recipie now.

  6. Scrap of an unfinished Literary Maneuver entry

    Half-Love

Eric slipped from slumber to wakefulness gently, and he snuggled tighter against Nate’s nakedness. He imagined they were alone together, just the two of them.

Savoring the fantasy, Eric rubbed his fingers lightly over Nate's smooth skin. The ring on his little finger hit something with a dull metallic click. Eric opened his eyes. The faint light of a thousand distant streetlights from the hillside a half mile away illuminated the bed. In the half-light, Eric ...

  7. Is That The Worst You Can Do part two

More or less adult content disclaimer:the following story is extremely bad, and also contains some scenes of a not-so-graphic but sort of sexual nature.

    Spaghettio
Blimpetto toiled in his workshop, day and night, working on his newest creation. Little by little, the small wooden toy took shape. He had a little hat and pointed ears and apple cheeks and big blue eyes and a short round nose atop a chunky little body and ...

  8. Is That the Worst You Can Do?

A selection of intentionally bad writings.

    Squatched

It was a dark and stormy night, like many other dark and stormy nights.

The sun had gone down, and there was wind and rain. But this night was different.

Creatures scurried furtively through the underbrush, running away from the presence that had appeared there in the woods.

A tongue appeared at the corner of Loupe's mouth as she ran, wind-whipped branches flaying her alabaster

    Color of The Earth-Frances Ayers

Beautiful color of the Earth, that I do love.
You strike my senses and fill my soul with glee.
Your vibrant hues fill the lovely sky above,
And bring out the autumn color of the trees.

Your pumpkin hues and copper shades fill the fields.
Deserts bright and Midwest skies stun our sight.
With glorius light that brightens and yields.
You warm me with your healing touch so bright.

    Yet your fire

    Thirty Winters Ago

It’s been thirty years since we laid you to rest on a winter day
The Ground covered with snow, forming a blanket where you’d lay

Wind rustling through trees, calling out your name as If In prayer
Mother you died so young!,I thought holding back a tear.

We chose a concrete vault to keep you safe from the cold
As we bowed our heads in prayer,It was your story that we told

  11. Unseen Presence

    Unseen Presence-by Frances Ayers

When life becomes hurried and choices are unclear,
there is an unseen Presence who will surely get us there.

We may not reach our destiny,at our chosen time
but there is someone wiser whose help we’ll always find.

He’ll give us hope to find our path,a light to guide the way.
His Strength will pull us up the hill and help us see the day.

He knows the road is rough,he’s been there long before.

    As Old As The Sea

    Deep and mysterious
    With an endless roar
    Lies the ancient sea
    With its’ mystical lore

    Eternal,boundless,Sea
    What creatures you hold
    You harbor such secrets
    Rich stories you’ve told

    Both complex and moody
    In storm or breeze
    Showing a Clear blue face
    Man sails across with ease

    A Patient Time

    A time for waiting,a hibernation
Before we follow through on dreams
    Careful planning,with determination
    Putting away halfed baked schemes

No day or night is ever wasted
Patience builds slowly day by day
The fruit of forbearance is soon tasted
Sweet as honey where we lay

Suddenly we are engaged in life
    Our souls’desire reaches out
And wraps its lasso around the moment
    Discarding all our ...

  14. Why

    Why

    Empty dark eyes
    Staring into space
    Feeling devoid of purpose,
    Have you embraced the grave?
Are you ready to leave behind ,
    All that you love?
    To give up your soul
    For an unknown place
    Without thought of the cost,
    To those left behind.
Who will pick up the pieces
    Of a shattered life?
    Is one fateful moment worth
    All the pain?
You have passed on to the living,
    On one tragic day.

  15. Fallen Earring pt two

Carefully locking the deadbolt behind him, Roger left the house, shaking his head at the state of his siding. Once it had been royal blue, but time and weather had reduced it to bluish gray. “I’ll have to get that taken care of,” he said. “Maybe the new album will get some money coming in.”
He unlocked the car, a twelve-year-old Nova in babyshit green, and stowed his guitar in the back seat. The vintage V8 roared into life as he turned the key, without depressing the gas pedal. ...

    prologue
As in the old saw about the kingdom and the nail, things often depend on chains of circumstance. The more tenuous the link, the more tangential the connection, the more likely that something interesting can happen. Often the smallest event, the tiniest detail, can cause the largest change as

Erotic Fantasy On A City Bus

Vacous eyes staring across the way
Becoming lost in my fantasies and lust
Dreaming up scenarios to escape the day
Escaping boredom on this city bus
I focus on him slithering in his chair
Feeling a desire and longing to touch
    Avoiding his glance,he is unaware
of how I desire him,so very much
Suddenly, the bus comes to a halt.

  18. She Wears a Flower in her Hair

Rosie Cahill is a crazy old bat, with swollen man hands and a flower in her hair.
She says that she's an artist, a dressmaker, and she used to be quite pretty.
She sometimes wears a lot of make up and says she thinks of me when she puts the blue on her lids.
But hers isn't neat like mine, and she sweats a lot.
One time I had to give her my mirror and a tissue, because it was streaking down her face and I knew she'd cry if she got home and realised.
    She cries enough ...

  19. Start Your Research Early

I heard Matt Groening say that he spent his teens watching bad TV and figured when he began writing the Simpsons all that wasted time could then be counted as research.
I spent my teens reading SF (good and bad) so when it came to writing I assumed I had a head start!

I get to arrive at a new place in my life and overcome not paying for my anger with the price of my happiness

  22. Paean

In honor of my lady's birthday yesterday, I humbly submit this further example of what I call verse:

    Paean

    As I sit...
    Missing you
    As I stand...
    Missing you
    As I lie...
    Lonely again, missing you
And the scent of vanilla wafts through the air
    I remember:
    The first sight of you
    The first half-shy smile
    Our first embrace
The feel of you against me
and the promise of tomorrow ...
