Telephones in Bertie Wooster's day were far less technologically advanced. The called party had no idea who was calling until the caller announced themselves.

But don't you see, she was expecting Bertie to call at that time.

The very idea of a P-G Wodehouse sex novel is funny in itself. Sort of like catching Jane Austin with her knickers down.

Hilarious language, but I think it doesn't quite make sense (and no, not the idea of a threesome with Jeeves). Bertie calls up this Regina woman and says he has a proposition for her, but doesn't make his proposition, just explains things can't stay up forever?

Thanks to everyone.

xO: What garza said.

garza: I'm glad you enjoyed.

I:The proposition is unsaid but obvious. You understood it yourself or you wouldn't have understood the threesome with Jeeves part. I don't believe Bertram would ever be so blunt on such a subject. He has a way of skipping around the issue. Or am I being daft?

But she's the one who suggested the threesome if I'm reading it correctly.

Here's how it goes for me:

Bertie: I have an idea.
Her: Yes?
Him: Remember all those travels we had and all that sex we had? Well, I can't really have much sex anymore because I am older and impotent.
Her: Oh, but you can invite Jeeves.
Him: *realises that a threesome is a good idea and calls Jeeves*

... Not really a 'proposition' in what he said to her.

But yes, he does dodge about what he's saying.
