Do you send out every story you write, or do you discard/shelve most of the stories you come up with, and send a select few to editors? Or maybe it's something in between?

Most of mine get shelfed... when I stumble across a publication that I think I have an unpublished story suitable for, I'll look back on what I've written, polish the chosen work and send it.
'Beauty stands and waits with gravity to start her death-defying leap. And he, a little charleychaplin man, who may or may not catch her fair eternal form spreadeagled in the empty air of existence.' - Laurence Felinghetti, 'The Acrobat'
I don't send much of my work. I'm still quite young, and learning so I don't need to hustle to get published... yet. I do send out the occasional short story that turned out really good. So far nothing, but most of them have been seriously considered, either that or publishers always tell you it was seriously considered.
Super humans need love too!

lately, a lot. historically, very little. last year i wrote a creative writing thesis, which was basically interconnected short stories that could stand on their own. the best of those got sent out, as well as more recent stuff. my goal is to amp up my CV for grad school applications, the deadlines for the applications of which are in december.

I have been writing ever since I was a kid... a lot of that stuff is gone and forgotten, although I wish I still had everything I have ever written.
Considering that, I have submitted a very small percentage of my work. I did not even start submitting work until last year. NaNoWriMo got me writing again after a long time of near inactivity, and I decided to get published... that is yet to happen, but it will.
If I knew more about writing and publishing when I was still in High School I think I would have submitted a lot of the stuff that I had written. Back then I was lazy and procrastinated a lot and was a real slacker.
I do plan on submitting most of what I am writing now. I am writing with the intention of getting published so even if something sits for a couple of months before I polish it up for submission, it will eventually get submitted.

No, I don't send out every story I write, because a lot of it either doesn't get finished or I don't have the energy to polish. A big downfall, which I'm working on. However, I have sent out more in the last year than I ever had before, and that's still not much, and it still hasn't got me published yet. I need to do more. Always need to do more!
Unless it's absolutely unfit, I'll send near anything out once. However, there are obvious favorites among the bunch, and those will get sent out more.
