Personal Help Thread For All Members

I've noticed since I've signed on here that there are more temporary threads than can be counted. These threads usually, but not always, are started by new members who only need an opinion on an opening line or paragraph, or a particular passage they've written. Once they feel they've received the advice they need, the thread disappears into oblivion and adds to the countless threads that already exist.

What I'd like to do with this thread is have any member post something brief that they need opinions or critiques on, such as stated above: A line, paragraph or passage (there should be a line limit on passages), then once they're finished getting what they need from other members, someone else can make the next entry to get opinions on their work. We can establish a time limit the poster has to wait for their advice, before the next person can be allowed to post their own work. Example: ABC posts on Jan 1st needing advice on an opening paragraph. They get responses and on Jan 3rd around the same time (there's bugs involving the time, depending on where each of us lives), ABC's time ends and DEF posts their new work.

I'd like to see this made into a "Sticky" or "Subforum", and also have the veteran forum members direct the newer members here by posting a link so they can all know there's a specific place to post their questions. I realize a few bugs have to be worked out. Occasionally two or more may need advice at the same time and might not want to wait. Also the post times seem to differ depending on which part of the world we live in, so while it's 9:15 pm Tuesday where I am, it's already 11:15 am Wednesday somewhere in Australia. I batted this around with another member and they like the idea, and I welcome any feedback on how to iron out any bugs.

PS: I know the title of the thread sounds contradictory so if anyone can think of anything better let me know.

No jerky or smarmy replies needed. If it's not your cup of tea, move on.

I just don't see that there's a need for it. A member posts a question or a bit of writing -- people will offer their comments. Once people have responded and the subject is exhausted -- the thread sinks. How is that a problem? Sometimes a brief question will lead to a lengthy exchange -- as long as people want to discuss something -- let them. Why enforce some time limit?

I agree with JosephB (should I submit that as poetry?). Forums like these are intended to be comfortable, relaxed, informal discussions. I don't think regimenting questions and answers would be very beneficial.

And, on a more practical front, I don't think it would stop many new members from starting their own threads for their own questions.

I dunno, it sounds like a good idea to me. Mind you I change first lines more often than my socks.

Had this issue been run by staff first then my immediate response would be why create a single thread, or even a sub forum, to do what this board is already intended for? It's pretty much as Joseph says.

It’s not that it’s a bad idea. It’s not. It’s just the administration of such a scheme that’s impossible to grasp. Have you ever been successful in having a handful of people all doing exactly as you’ve asked? And I was talking real life people there, never mind online identities. You’d have more luck herding cats.

What Ox's second post says. You can have all the sticky paper you want, but the flies will always land in your soup.
