    advise needed on writing courses

    Hello all!
I am very interested in doing a course in creative writing but dont know where to start on my search. I have looked at several courses that are offered online but dont know which is the best to take. This is my first attempt at learning creative writing and I was hoping that someone on this forum could possibly guide me or suggest some courses that would be an all round learning experience.
    thanking you in advance
    Vanilla

    Vanilla,

It is very difficult to offer advice on this subject without some slight hint as to where you live. If you live in London or New York there are probably dozens if, on the other hand, you live in Anchorage or Sark your choice may be limited to none. If the latter be the case you may have to seek out online courses, such as those run by the Poetry School http://www.poetryschool.com/courses-workshops/online/ - which is in London, but may well be accessible from anywhere in the world (living in London, unsurprisingly, I haven't checked!), or The Open University http://search.open.ac.uk/public/search/results?q=Creative writing if poetry isn't your bag - Both of these you would have to pay for; free taught courses are far more difficult to find, but will of course depend very much on your location and access to community colleges which may be either free or relatively inexpensive, like CityLit in central London http://www.citylit.ac.uk/ which has many types writing course available, and where I am a member of a poetry group.

Several UK universities offer 1 year "Postgraduate/Certificate of Education" courses in Creative Writing, combining different aspects poetry/drama/short story or variations thereof, I assume that universities and colleges all over the world offer similar courses.

Most of the courses available in the UK: http://www.poetrylondon.co.uk/listing/courses#residential This covers distance learning as well.

I'll leave it to garza to offer his two jalapeno peppers' worth, which should be very similar to what I'd say if it wasn't already way past my bedtime.

Hey, vanilla, you could try F2K: Fiction writing for the new millennium. This is a free online course that I took years ago and it covers some basic fiction writing skills very well. Do NOT feel that you have to upgrade to the paid version. You do get critiques from the people running the course if you do the paid version otherwise you follow the course work, do the assignments, and post them for the other students to read and comment on. You also read and comment on other students' work and the atmosphere is pretty relaxed and social but for the deadlines each week.

I'd say take the free course, you can't beat the price and it's online so distance is not a factor.

I did a one year course at Birkbeck while working fulltime - Look for evening courses.
