    Analytical Essay on Jules Verne

    Hey everyone,

I am currently engaged in writing a research essay/analytical essay on Jules Verne and "A Journey to The Center of The Earth" So far I have used historical references to talk about Jules Verne and how he got his start. The whole point behind the Essay was to explore the idea that Jules Verne was the first creator and most important influential author to modern science fiction literature. So heres my questions, I have already used a historical theme to explore the idea but does anyone have any suggestions on the analytical part? Is there anything I should really focus on? Also, is there any authors anyone could point me to that would help me our in my research? Should I post what I have so far on the forums?

Oh and here`s my thesis statement: Jules Verne was a revolutionary thinker among the literary world and crafted the foundations of what modern science fiction has become today.

    - Thanks!

I haven't written an analytical essay in quite a while, but I don't think adding the history has anything to do with proving your thesis. In an analytical statement, you must support your statement that he laid the foundations of modern science fiction. But someone may correct me on this. I've been out of college 16 years.

History is a big no-no in academic writing. If your university asks you to write a paper about how important Charles Darwin was, you normally don't write about where he was born, how he grew up, or mention any history that isn't relevant to answering the question.

There might be one problem: The term 'science fiction' was only coined in the early 20th Century, but Jules Verne is arguably not the first to start writing in the genre. Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels was written a whole 140 years before Verne's Journey to the Centre of the Earth and is considered the first science fiction novel.

^ Gulliver's Travels is considered science fiction? I never knew that.

I didn't know Gulliver's Travels was considered science fiction either. Where'd you read that? It sounds more fantasy than science fiction. I mean horse who can talk sounds a bit fantastical to me.
