    Does this sound familiar?

    Or am I over analysing?

Regarding my current work, I can go from thinking any of the following:

1 - My story is unique (meaning good) and I am telling it in an original and interesting way
2 - My story is ridiculous but I am telling it in an original and interesting way
3 - My story is ridiculous and it will be laughed at
4 - My story is unique (meaning good) but I am telling it in the wrong way

Mostly I think number 1, but when 2,3 and 4 creep into my mind it causes stress.

I am currently waiting for someone to finish reading it for me so I can get feedback.

Do other writers go through this?

Yes - Any or all of those...

Most of the time, I sit happily at #1. However, occasionally I'll see a movie or something that was really well done, and I'll get discouraged and think, "What's the point? Mine will never be that good." Then there are the times when I feel like I write like a total amateur, with unnecessary words, unnecessary details, unrealistic scenes, poor use of language, and so on. Sometimes I'll think, "Well, this whole thing is garbage and I don't like where it's going, but I might as well finish it and see what can be salvaged." Finally, there are the rare times when my only thoughts are, "This is *really* dark and doesn't have a lot of redeeming qualities...why would anyone read this? What am I doing?"

Fortunately, most of the time I'm enthusiastic about my work. Once I finish writing my story, I'll let the rest sort itself out.

If it sounds familiar then I start again. Look at the word familiar. LIAR. I don't like liar's so I don't like that word. Write what is in your hear. If you have to ask questions then you are on the wrong path.

Did you even read the OP?
Remember why you like to read, and inundate your writing with your love of story. No great writer ever found reading a chore.

I sit on #1 until I have someone else read my work, then I'll sit and mope at 2 or 3 all day acting like an angsty teenager, then eventually I start hiding from an imaginary lynch mob who is looking to tar and feather me.

Today I have decided not to think at all about it. Made a tentative start on a short story and have a new SF book to read later which will be good. What I find though is that whenever I read anything else I end up thinking about my own story again. But the good news is that I start thinking at number 1 everytime.

Perhaps I overworked myself on it and needed a break.

That sounds like me too. But when I watch films I always imgaine how they could have made the film better.
