    The dilemma!

Have you ever been hit by writer's block and decided to write down something that actually happened just to get the words flowing again?

I'm stuck on my book about a terrorist and his conversion to Christianity, and when I ran into a female ex-con who was at an event celebrating an inmate writing program for imprisoned women she said to me, quite bluntly, "What do I care about what you made up? I want to hear something real," I decided to toy around the idea of a memoir.

But aren't memoirs really, really played out?

    Especially rebellious coming-of-age types?

I have certainly done that before. Often times, I would just write down whatever is in my mind at the moment. If later on I feel that it isn't something worth writing about, or just doesn't fit the story, I'll save it for the future and use it as what I like to call a "recycled idea".

You don't have to listen to her. If you want to write fiction, go for it. An idea if you don't want to do a full on memoir, you could always try taking a real experiance/story and changing the names of the people along with adding extra fictional events. That way, you have a bit of both worlds.

    Peace,

I'd hesitate to change my work on the basis of one person who hasn't even read it. Different people want different things, maybe she just doesn't fall into your target audience?

Make your writing believable and don't worry about what everyone will think, just the people you expect to read the book.

What she meant in her own crude way is that she doesn't like to read fiction.
