For my characters, I have used both common (Franklin, Christopher, Jess, Emma) and more foreign names (Aleksandra, Roman, Katya, Isamu, Takuto). It depends on the setting of the story. If the story takes places in another country, the character would probably not have an English sounding name.

Are you intending on creating a foreign or fantasy character? Or are you just looking for less common names?

I can see Valentina or Katerina (although if you know the meaning of that name, it would be a bit ironic) working for that role as well.

I've always find a few writers ingenious when it comes to coming up with names. Take Maximillian Kohler, for example. When I first read Angels & Demons, and first read the name, I was immediately sure Kohler was an academic. Same with Lucien Wilbanks from the Grisham novels. The name immediately depicts an antagonist character.

I do think that when authors are able to do something like this, then that's a credit good for them.
